The 20 deadliest tropical cyclones to strike the U.S. mainland from 1851 to 2006: 1. Galveston, Texas (1900): Category 4, killed more than 8,000.
2. Lake Okeechobee, Fla. (1928): Category 4, killed 2500.
3. Katrina, Louisiana, Mississippi (2005): Category 3, killed 1,500.
4. Cheniere Caminanda (1893): Category 4, killed 1100-1400.
5. Sea Islands, South Carolina, Georgia (1893): Category 3, killed 1000-2000.
6. Georgia, South Carolina, (1881): Category 2, killed 700.
7. Hurricane Audrey (1957): Category 4, killed 416.
8. Florida Keys (1935): Category 5, killed 408.
9. Louisiana (1856): Category 4, killed 400.
10. Florida, Mississippi, Alabama (1926): Category 4, killed 372.
11. Grand Isle, Louisiana, (1909): Category 3, killed 350.
