Carlisle crowns Jewell to lead football program

By Ron Jackson, Staff Writer

Billy Jewell, 29, can't wait to take charge of his own football program. He was named the new Carlisle head coach Monday, replacing John Aregood.

"I'm going to hit the ground running," said Jewell, who inherits a 3-7 team. "We don't need four years to rebuild this program. We can win more than we lose next year. This team needs stability and I plan on bringing that with me. I'm a Carlisle native and I want to stay here another 15 or 20 years."

Jewell served a three-year apprenticeship on the Valley View staff under Jay Niswonger and calls Niswonger "his biggest influence" when it comes to practice and game preparation. Jewell excelled as a linchpin on the Spartans' 1994 state championship team. Jewell was an assistant at Carlisle the last two years.

Jewell was named the school district's Innovative Teacher of the Year and teaches at Chamberlain Middle School. "I already bought my wife Carmen a pillow that has the following stitched on it, 'This Marriage is Interrupted to Bring You the Football Season,'" Jewell said smiling. "I haven't told her yet that football is a year-round sport."

The two other finalists were Bellbrook assistant Mark Genders of Dayton and Hamilton assistant Arvie Crouch.
