Monroe takes advantage of errors to beat Fenwick, 9-2

By John Bombatch, Staff Writer

Monroe's Jordan Eastham limited the host Falcons to just four hits, while her teammates took advantage of four Fenwick errors, in Monday's 9-2 win.

The win, combined with Edgewood's win over Dayton Stebbins, leaves four teams — Fenwick, Monroe, Edgewood and West Carrollton — all within a game of each other in the battle for first in the MML South.

Monroe and Fenwick are both 5-2 in the division, Edgewood is now 4-3, and it is believed that West Carrollton is also 5-2.

Falcon coach Gene Steiner hoped to make a post-season statement with a win over the Hornets. Last Saturday, Monroe was voted the top seed among Division III schools in the sectional tournament; Fenwick was voted No. 2.

In the third inning, the Hornets scored three runs on one hit and a couple of Falcon errors. Tamara Davis, Megan Beckett and Brandi Hubbard each scored with Sara Rossi garnering the lone hit.

Through three innings, Fenwick ace Allison Mills limited Monroe to three hits. But Monroe sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, and scored five runs on four more hits and two more errors.

Monroe (10-3) scored once more in the top of the seventh.

Eastham gave Fenwick (8-4) fits with a solid pitching performance. She struck out 11 Falcons, including the game's last two batters.

"I was throwing a lot of inside drop pitches, mainly drops and a good rise ball," she said.

Fenwick's Linda Tosh and Mills each scored in the fourth inning, but Fenwick stranded 10 other base runners.

Tosh went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, single, double and a triple to lead all hitters.
