COMMENT: Do you agree with our list?

The Reds have traded plenty of big names through the years. How we rank them in terms of name power and impact on the franchise:
1. Frank Robinson, 1966, to Orioles for Milt Pappas, Jack Badschun and Dick Simpson.
2. Tony Perez, 1976, and Will McEnaney to Expos for Woodie Fryman and Dale Murray.
3. George Foster, 1982, to Mets for Alex Trevino, Jim Kern and Greg Harris.
4. Sean Casey, 2005, to Pirates for David Williams.
5. Paul O'Neill, 1992, and Joe DeBerry to Yankees for Roberto Kelly.
6. Josh Hamilton, 2007, to Rangers for Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera.
7. Nick Esasky, 1988, and Rob Murphy to Red Sox for player to be named later (Luis Vasquez), Todd Benzinger and Jeff Sellers.
8. Ken Griffey Sr., 1981, to Yankees for player to be named later (Freddie Toliver) and Brian Ryder.
9. Vada Pinson, 1968, to Cardinals for Bobby Tolan and Wayne Granger.
10. Brett Boone, 1998, to Braves for Denny Neagle, Michael Tucker and Rob Bell.

Dave Parker was picked up as a free agent before the ‘84 season, and was traded to the A’s for Rijo and Tim Birtsas after the ‘87 season.
Like someone said, Pete Rose left for Philly via free agency, but came back to the Reds in Aug. ‘84 from Montreal via a trade. Great trivia question: Name the only player ever to be traded for Pete Rose? Answer: Tom Lawless!
Danny Jackson for Kurt Stillwell. Jeff Brantley for Dmitri Young. Hal Morris for Tim Leary (I think)? Kelly for Deion!

The DDN staff really missed the boat on this one. On November 29, 1971 the Reds sent Lee May, Tommy Helms and Jimmy Stewart to the Houston Astros for Joe Morgan, Dennis Menke, Jack Billingham and Cesar Geronimo. If this doesn’t make your top FIVE list, you don’t know beans about baseball.

I remember the night we got Seaver. I was a kid and we had just left Riverfront and the trade was announced. There were kids in back of a station wagon with the window down chanting ” We got Seaver”’ It was a fond memory. Seaver won 21 games between the Mets and Reds that year.

Re: Brian’s post and Josh Hamilton.
Need to remember this is not about the best , worst, or trades that should not have occurred. It is about “name power and impact.”

We never traded Kearns/Lopez for Majewski/Guardado, it was Majewski, Bray, Harris, Thompson and CLayton

The Reds also traded away Paul Konerko (1998) and Ben Broussard (2002).

How about Austin Kearns and Filipe Lopez for Eddie Guardado and Gary Majewski? That worked out well… You’ll see them this weekend with the likes of Dimitri Young and Aaron Boone. Jim Bowden is probably trying to convince Hal Morris, Michael Tucker and Greg Vaughn to come fill the rest of the field all the meanwhile trying to trade Barry Larkin for a lifetime supply of Cracker Jacks and the big apple from Shae Stadium.

I can remember the Reds trading Big Klu for of all people Dee Fondy!
Getting George Foster from the Giants for Vern Gershart or whoever was the best trade I ever see them make. The Morgan Deal was also great but some good players went to Houston. Of recent times the Hamilton for Volquez ranks right at the top.

You hit the nail on the head with the Sean Casey and Josh Hamilton trades. The ball club has not been the same since the Reds traded away “The Mayor”, the heart and soul of their team in ‘05. I know that they got a good pitcher in Volquez, but trading Hamilton was another terrible move. He is a Triple Crown contender now in Texas! Gfiffey, Dunn and Phillips practically drove Josh out of town with their whining and crying about him being more popular than them and signing autographs for fans.

How about Adam Dunn for a ham sandwich? Oh wait, that one hasn’t happened yet…but give Reds time…. it will happen…

Lee May and Tommy Helms for Joe Morgan and Cesar Geronimo from the Astros has to be one of the best. Morgan was the catalyst to all those great years in the 70’s. The 1975 - 76 team won back-to-back World Series and the Big Red Machine is considered one of the best teams in MLB history.

The Josh Hamilton trade shouldn’t be on this list. I’d make that trade again 10 out of 10 times and twice on Sunday.

How about John Franco for Randy Myers. It Rafael Landestoy for Franco from the Dodgers was a gift from the Gods and sending Franco to the Mets for Myers was a dismal idea. One or two wild, short careered nasty boys was already sufficient. Franco was the last great closer the Reds had and it has shown.

Didn’t Jose Rijo come over in a trade? He brought us a World Series. I also loved the Seaver trade. I was a kid and we had gone to a Reds-Mets game. Seaver pitched and lost 2-0, I think Bench hit a HR. After the game we were under the stadium at the players exit and Seaver came out. Me and a few kids ran after him. He graciously signed autographs. I told him I was a Reds fan but liked him too and wished he played for the Reds. A few weeks later, the Reds got him. I was sure it because of me!

Rose wasn’t traded IIRC, he became a free agent. The Reds picked up an aging Dave Parker in the 80’s and at the time was a big time pickup. The trade for Seaver was my favorite as a kid. They had Vida Blue but Bowie Kuhn nixed the trade saying it wasn’t in the best interest of baseball. The Reds have a habit of trading away fan favorites like Josh Hamilton, Sean Casey, Chris Stynes, and another little second baseman I can’t recall. All of these in the last few years.

How about Trevor Hoffman before ever reaching the majors?
Oh, and let’s not forget that we got several players from the Paul Oneil trade.
1) Roberto Kelly 2) Bobbie Kelly 3) and I think Mr. Hyde
Who all remembers that. :)

Help me out here. Is this a list of the worst trades in franchise history? The Reds have a long history of trading away Hall of Famers for undeveloped (and mostly never to be developed) talent.

How about the Hit King, Pete Rose, to Philly…for who? Philly won their only modern-era WS with Rose at 1st…who will forget his assist/catch at the dugout…to help win the series…

What about one of Cincinnati’s first great trades. They shipped Buck Herzog and Wade Killifer to the Giants for over the hill, Christy Matthewson, their soon to be great manager Bill McKechnie and Ed Roush, all who were bound for Cooperstown.
Roush was voted in 1981 as one of the 100 top players as was Matthewson.
The Joey Jay deal helped win the 61 pennant. Getting Randy meyers from the mets helped win the 90 series.
I liked the Jim McGlothlin and pedro Bourbon trade for alex Johnson

Your list is of the great players the Reds have traded AWAY. But we can add The Big Bopper (May), the 1967(?) Rookie of the Year (Helms) and Super-Sub (Stewart) to the Astros.
Would the Big Red Machine have jelled with Helms at 2nd, May at 1st and Perez & 3rd? Maybe Foster would have had to play CF?
But Morgan’s 2 MVP seasons would be hard to replace. Perez couldn’t have continued playing 3rd base as he aged. Rose moved from RF-LF-3B-1B through the 70’s, which wouldn’t’ve been possible either

i wasn’t alive for robinson or perez getting traded, but trading paul o’neill for roberto “bobby” kelly is pathetic. he had a cannon in right field and hit for a pretty decent average. o’neill goes to new york and becomes a superstar who finds his way onto a “seinfield” episode. the only thing i remember about kelly is him changing his name to bobby when he sucked enough to think that would help. awful decision
