Vallo feels hunted in victory

By Greg Billing

XENIA — As John Vallo stalked win No. 299, he could feel himself being hunted, too.

"I felt someone right behind me. Was the No. 24 right there?" Vallo asked in victory lane, referring to Tim Allensworth.

He was. But Allensworth didn't have enough to run down Vallo in the 100-lap Dick Dunlevy Memorial at Kil-Kare Speedway on Friday, June 27.

The late model division win moved Vallo within one of the career milestone he's chasing this season, his 300th win.

Allensworth, who won the inaugural Dunlevy Memorial as a 40-lap race last season, started from the pole.

He led the first 22 laps before Vallo edged him at the start/finish line. Vallo, who had Allensworth on his bumper a few times, never lost the lead.

"The competition has definitely gotten faster this year," Allensworth said prior to the race. "John Vallo in Gary Estes' ride, that's definitely a tough team to beat. Justin Alsip and Sam Heckman have all picked up time and we've actually slowed up a little bit."

Last season Allensworth won eight of the first 11 features. He has one this season.

Vallo, who retained his points lead with his third Kil-Kare win this season, was followed by Allensworth, Donnie Renner, Sam Heckman and Robert Justus.

Checkered flag

Chris Boggs held an impromptu family reunion after his first win in the compacts division. Boggs, who entered second in points, celebrated with a handful of family members from the grandstand.

Points leader Tim Haerr was second.

Mike South Jr. won his second sports stock feature and took over the points lead from runner-up Justin Miller.

Both drivers entered Friday's action tied atop the standings.

Caleb Reschar won his second modified feature in a three-car sprint with Jack Jones and Jason Mahaffey.

Moment of silence

Before the start of the Dunlevy Memorial, Kil-Kare had a moment of silence for Barbara "Bobbie" Nuckles. The co-owner of Columbus Motor Speedway passed away on Wednesday.
