Who were county's best wrestlers?

Four days from now, 672 wrestlers will assemble at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus to decide who is the best of the best in Ohio in 2008.
So what better time to look back and pay homage to some wrestlers who were not only the best of the best during their time, but the greatest of all time?

Beginning Feb. 24, and running through Wednesday, Feb. 27, we will count down the top 16 high school wrestlers in Butler County history.
It's a pretty sweet list, but we're talking about wrestlers here, so we can't very well call it the "Sweet 16."
A more appropriate moniker is the "Sweat 16," because collectively, there are no harder working athletes than wrestlers.
Speaking of hard work, compiling the Sweat 16 wasn't exactly bon-bons and bubble gum. Butler County has produced dozens of great wrestlers, and whittling them down to an elite group of 16 was difficult.
The list is subjective, of course. There's no real way to distinguish between a lighter weight with three state places in the 80's and a heavyweight with three trips to the podium in the 90's.
I consulted various wrestling coaches, both current and former, and weighed their opinions heavily. But ultimately, the decision was mine.
Only wrestlers who competed for schools in Butler County were considered. And they are ranked primarily on their high school careers. Summer nationals and collegiate accomplishments were factored in, but to a lesser extent.
Surely there will be disagreements about who was put on and who was left off the list.

One final note about the list: No current wrestlers were considered. While there are many fine ones out there, their bodies of work are not only incomplete, they're missing the biggest piece of all.
As you will see over the next four days, the careers of most of the Sweat 16 were defined by what they did at the state tournament their senior year.
