Experienced Buckeyes preseason pick to win Big Ten
COMMENT: What team do you think will win the Big Ten this year?
Thursday, July 24, 2008
CHICAGO — Ohio State, which returns 19 of 22 starters from a team that reached the national title game last year, was picked as the Big Ten preseason football favorite in a poll of the media today, July 24.
The Buckeyes' James Laurinaitis, who won the Butkus Award last season as the nation's top linebacker, was named the conference preseason defensive player of the year. Running back Chris "Beanie" Wells, who set an OSU sophomore rushing record last year with 1,609 yards, was named the preseason offensive player of the year.
Wisconsin, which returns 17 starters from a squad that produced a 9-4 record last season, was picked to finish second by the media, followed by Illinois, which is coming off a Rose Bowl appearance and returns 13 starters.
Only the top three teams in the poll are announced.

Doesn’t anyone look at the schedule? OSU is done in November, while the SEC is still duking it out over who is #1 in their conference. This has a lot to do with it. They have 8 wks off while other teams have 4. Doesn’t not make sense to me. The SEC is a bunch of show boatin’ thugs. Tressel is the real deal and is not in the same league as the other coaches. Oh, and by the way Urban Meyer is from Ohio.

Oh, OSU losing in two straight title games has sunk in. What also sunk in: Ohio State was destroyed in one by a good team, and the Buckeyes shouldn’t have been in the second one, where they were trounced by an average team.
Your 115-team stat is laughable…
Year one: Good OSU team crushed
Year two: Overrated, undeserving OSU team thumped
I get it.

TO ALL YOU OSU HATERS It’s not like Ohio State got waxed in two straight Poinsettia Bowls. It’s not like the Buckeyes have been pummeled by Vanderbilt and Kentucky. The team lost two straight national championship games (let that sink in for a moment) to teams that would’ve beaten at least 115 other teams in a BCS Championship game. Yes, it really is possible Ohio State was very good and just plain lost two really big games.
BTW, where was your team, oh yea, watching from HOME!!

The buckyeyes are beginning to look like John Cooper teams..all the talent in the world no excuse for not winning multiple championships but something in the coaching is lacking.

m dying for Big Ten football. I now live in Jacksonville FL deep in SEC land. What can I now say to the rednecks who think all Big Ten teams are week and not worthy to be included in conversation of whos best. Here SEC rules and the rest are an afterthought. The Bucks are hands down the best team in the Big Ten. Do you think that scares a FLA team, GEO, AUBURN, etc… Not at all. Let us all get behind all Big Ten teams to shut up these fu….. rednecks. COME ON BEG TEN!!!!!!!!! BO BUCKS!!!

Tressel gave the following comments regarding Fellows and recruiting. Forgive me for not quoting exactly: ” If we are recruiting a player, and he commits to another school, we wish him good luck. In the Fellows case, OSU had not contacted him when he made the ILL commitment. OSU contacted him, told him they had only recently seen his tapes, and asked him if he was still open to OSU. He said yes.” Oh, and to By Really?, Fellows has not signed, he’s a commitment.

Chargerbuck: I think OSU loses three overall: USC, Wisky, and a random team they have no business losing to, just like other years. Don’t be surprised if it’s Michigan—I think most would agree that OSU definitely has that one in the bag, and when you see something in a rivalry that seems so certain, crazy things tend to happen.
James B.: Who cares when it happens? You’re either against stealing verbals, or you think it’s OK—it’s hard to feel both ways without looking foolish (like JT).

Yes Really it is too different situations. Fellows gave a verbal how early in the year to Ill.? When did those kids who verballed to Purdue change there mind? A little late in the recruiting process don’t you think. It looks a little fishy when it happens the day a player is aloud to sign. Fellows was even listed as a soft verbal. I could be wrong but I wouldn’t think Jim T. would be trying to steal verbals on national signing day.

Hey Teflon-
What’s your problem? Tressel has more class than a typical FB coach on the college level. Who wouldn’t want their kid to play for him. I understand your comment about Melvin Fellows- but your credibility goes out the window predicting three OSU losses this year — to who?????

OSU will, ohio state lost to florida becasue they took them for granted in when you come into a game thinking you got the game won you usually get blown out. Secondly LSU I think had a slighlty better team then OSU Ohio State could have one if it weren’t for dumb penalties and BECKMAN. He f**n sucks.

Greg: Yes, exposed. He’s made his name from winning big games against such legends as Larry Coker, Charlie Weis, Lloyd Carr, and Mack Brown—not exactly the most brilliant coaching minds of the last 10 years. Three of the four are/were pathetic.
There’s no shame in losing a close game to an Urban Meyer team, but that was a disgusting blowout. LSU was only “great” on paper, and they still manhandled the Buckeyes. OSU has lost to several outmanned teams with lousy coaches (see: Zook, Ron), too.

Two totally different situations?
1) A player verballed to Purdue, but Michigan signed the player. Tressel takes a jab at Michigan’s coach.
2) A player verballed to Illinois, but Ohio State signed the player. Tressel did not appear to take a jab at himself.
Yeah, they’re different in that Tressel thought one was OK.

Tressel has been exposed in the last two years??? He’s lost to two great SEC squads. There is no way OSU lose more than 1 game this year. If and when they beat USC on the road they’ll be down for their third straight tilte game. And if you’re really a “Big Ten fan” then you’d want them to win each game out of conference. Seeing the kill everyone in teh Big 10 anyways it makes your teams look even weaker.

Tressel did not “steal” Melvin Fellows. Fellows was still considering taking visits to other schools, which would tell me is was not 100% sure where he wanted to go. Too totally different situations.

PSU Fan: Agreed about your Paterno comments. He’s one of the few selfless personalities in college sports. He could care less about how many career wins he has—he’s all about the kids and the university.

Sure, Tressel gave a “subtle jab” at Rodriguez for breaking this “gentlemen’s agreement,” and then the Sweatervest turned around and stole an Illinois recruit. Anyone heard of Melvin Fellows?
Tressel is a fake who has been exposed in the last two years. Put Ohio State down for three losses this year, and no better than second place in the conference.
Wisconsin wins the league this year.

Unless something crazy happens, Ohio State will more than likely win the Big Ten again this year.
As for the Bowden/Paterno comment, apparently staff reporter Doug Harris doesn’t know much about Paterno and Penn State. Joe will coach for as long as he wants to, just like he should be able to do. For someone like Joe who has contributed more to the game of college football than most anyone, do you think something as silly as a single record is what keeps him going? Get over yourself!
