I would like to know why so many children have been diagnosed with swine flu and our schools are not shut down.

They say in the United States, we build the best. We can build anything and it works and lasts. It is funny how nobody can build a good computer in the United States. ... Yes, the more expensive ones last a little longer but eventually they break. Why can’t they build a computer — like they build televisions — that lasts forever?

The speed limit was already 55 mph in the construction area on I-75 prior to the fatal accidents. It’s that people are too stupid to read the 55 mph signs, just like they are too stupid to know that a red light means “stop.”

Regarding the Trenton water bill for two people being $80 a month: I can top that one. There is one person who lives in my house and my water bill has been running $90 a month. I compared it with my next-door neighbor’s and it runs from $40-$50. I would like to know what is going on with the water bills in Trenton, also.

The gas companies are gouging our eyes out again. I just beg everybody — do not drive unless it is absolutely necessary. Do not let them do this to us. We are tired of this abuse. Do something to help.

I wish City Council would come down to the corner of Grimes Street and Flemming Road and look at the vandalized vacant home at the corner. It has been empty for 11/2 years. It is a dangerous eyesore for the neighborhood. ...

What is going on with the city manager and the council? Someone gave the order to tear out all the plants and shrubs, and plant grass seed and straw over at the historical cemetery on First Avenue. They did away with five years of work to beautify this sacred ground. Now we have a sign that says the hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. No visitation on weekends. Gates are locked per the park department. ... If you work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the gates are locked at 3 p.m. and then they are not open on weekends, you have no chance to visit your loved ones. I am sure this is against the law for cemeteries. I sure hope someone opens their eyes and straightens them out.

At Middfest this year, I learned there are thousands of islands that make up Indonesia. Last year, I couldn’t even spell “yurt,” but, after attending the Mongolian Middfest, I got to stand inside one and learn about this nomadic people. Every year, I plan my autumn around the first weekend in October so I won’t miss Middfest. I love seeing the city plaza teeming with people of all different nationalities. You would spend more than $5 to go to a movie with a plot you would have completely forgotten a week later; but take your kids to Middfest and it might make them curious enough about other lands that they may someday decide to travel to some of them. ... With so many things wrong with this city, Middfest is a gem that we can’t let go down the tubes. I urge Virginia Ritan and all her volunteers to not be disheartened by the negative calls about Middfest. For every adverse call, I bet there are a dozen people out there thinking along the same lines as myself.

In reading the Oct. 26 Middletown Journal about Monroe’s gateway, I don’t understand. It is good for them and all that, but it looks to me — with people starving, no jobs and all the other stuff that’s going on in our country at this time — that the money that they spent for all those decorations could be spent in a better way, such as helping people who are starving and helping our country. ...

Well, I can't prove it to you coin man. No one is starving in Middletown because you are making them rich by handing out dollar bills. I think I'll go downtown sometime and you can hand me a few dollars.

doctors are no longer testing for "swine flu", and have not for a while. yet, they are telling people, "we are treating it like it was swine flu." that's what is causing the panic. they are telling parents this without knowing for sure. guess what, it's treated the same as strand A flu. 10's of thousands of people die each year from "regular flu." why aren't you people concerned about that one?

I served in Korea and Europe. Have been in every state except Alaska and Hawaii. Born and raised in a holler in Ky. Still have friends and family there. Know no one who is going hungry. Show me a record of anyone starving in U S of A. Until then SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE. If I am wrong prove it.

I have lived all over the world and all over the U.S. I'm retired military, Nam veteran. I do get out. Yes we have lazy people in this world. People that don't what to work. But what you said was not right.
