No faith in AARP

I’ve never had much faith in AARP, ever since a few years ago (when) they backed a bill to relieve companies that went belly up of all responsibility for their retirement plans. I don’t believe that they really have the best interests of older people at heart. They are just another big organization that’s outgrown its usefulness.

Why is it that, only in America, we call the Democrat Party the liberals and the Republican Party the conservatives? In Europe, the Democrats are rightly labeled socialists. It is time they come out of the closet. They are proud socialists, plain and simple. Barack Obama is their leader. How’s that change working out for you?

We can now dub Congressman John Boehner with two new titles. The first is “demagogue.” Come on, John — the proposed health bill is the greatest threat to freedom? What about al-Qaeda and the Taliban? The second title is “moron” — for holding a copy of the Constitution and claiming to be quoting from it when, in reality, you were quoting the Declaration of Independence. That was priceless. It is time for John Boehner to retire.

Thirty years ago, American hostages were held in Iran for 444 days under a weakling named (Jimmy) Carter. Now, a spineless (Barack) Obama is letting Iran jerk him around, too. Let’s elect a courageous decisive leader in 2012. We’ve had it with wimps and those who disdain our country.

This is for the Scrooge who called in about Christmas music. I wonder — could you not just buy a cheap pair of ear plugs and keep them in your pocket? Anytime you hear a Christmas song, put them in your ears. You don’t speak for the rest of Middletown and not for Franklin. I, for one, don’t wait till the 24th of December to do my Christmas shopping. Most people start in early November, sometimes October. ...

Regarding the Nov. 9 Sound Off about the age of trick-or-treaters: There should never be an age limit on trick or treat. It is all in fun. You either choose to give a person a piece of candy or you don’t. ... Why should there be an age limit? Everybody likes candy.

Regarding the caller about trick-or-treat night: It is all in fun ... even for the lady who is 50 years old. She might have been out there watching the little kids to make sure they were safe. It was all fun and games. I had older kids. I had younger kids. You always end up having a bunch of candy left over anyway. ...

Regarding the age of trick-or-treaters: I was probably the one who’s 50 years old that she gave the candy to. But she didn’t have to give it to me. I was doing it for my grandkid who is handicapped. All she had to do was ask me and I would have told her. Don’t complain about giving candy to adults. If you don’t want to give out candy, don’t be out there. It’s Beggars Night.

A big happy 75th anniversary to the Meadows restaurant and a big “thank you” to (staff writer) Jessica Heffner for the article in the Nov. 9 Middletown Journal. The Meadows has been and always will be a favorite of me and my family. Happy anniversary.

Congratulations, Middletown High School. You finally built a successful football program. Now maybe you can take the same effort and energy into building an academic program for our students — so they can thrive in the world and go out and find jobs, instead of just bragging about the football team they had.
