I have now seen firsthand what the media can do to a person, especially one running for an upcoming election. The elected mayor of Carlisle is all over the front page and top stories in the local news: “Carlisle mayor under investigation for inappropriate material on his city-owned computer.”
It seems the media has already convicted him without stating even one fact about the accusations. Tim Humphries has been a close friend of mine — as well as my friends and family — for many years. I know him as an honest, respectable, clean-cut, humorous individual to be around. Many others in Carlisle must agree since we recently elected him to be our mayor. Everyone has sides we don’t know and, as humans, we are all capable of making bad judgments sometimes.
The accusations — where did they come from anyway? They came from an anonymous tip to police which seems easy enough for anyone to do, especially if they are in support of an opposing side in an upcoming election someone is in. I am not making light of any accusations. I am just reminding you that accusations are just that.
In the meantime, let’s not make assumptions about cases against people we are ignorant about. Let’s give him the support he needs. Let the police do their job, and hope for these accusations to turn out nonthreatening — bad human judgment — or even better, not true at all.
