‘Ignorant excuse’

Hot Topics

Updated 7:00 PM Thursday, October 29, 2009

I would like to speak on behalf of the Madison seniors as well as a large group of Madison community members.

Oct. 23 was “Senior Night” at Madison High School’s Brandenburg Field. The students were lined up on the track, an hour before game time, with roughly 20 people in the stands. Our senior athletes were introduced basically in front of a nonexistent crowd. Do our senior athletes not deserve more than this?

I know some of the excuses I’m going to hear, the main one being: “We had to get our senior players off the track and onto the field for warm-ups.” That is an ignorant excuse if you were to ask me.

If nothing else, extend halftime a little bit longer (or don’t) and introduce the senior football players only at halftime. Give the rest of the senior athletes the credit they deserve and introduce them at 7:10 p.m. (or so) in front of more than 20 people. ...

For years this had been done at halftime. (There is) No excuse not to continue to do it that way. None.

Our football team isn’t a powerhouse. Never has been and perhaps never will be. Having said that, there have been traditions that have been taken away from the community and its students. Give some of the fun back. ...
