Ohio apparently will become the next state to consider legislation to require employers to verify the citizenship of prospective employees.

It is long over due! If this is applied to the rest of the fifty states it will work to together and save millions of $ in taxpayers money in the long run.

Ever heard of the grass roots level? If every city and county nationwide did their part to eliminate the illegals, then the problem would be solved nationally. I have no problem making the Federal government look bad. If you've got a SS card, show it to potential employers. That makes it difficult for SS to deny citizenship. It's a good thing I don't work in a hospital. There would be a lot of illegal, immigrant babies born on the waiting room floor!

Taxpayer, you really sound like you're benefiting in some way. To your comments, I’m not religious and I have more insight into business, etc. than I’ll share. In regard to schools, they have to add teachers at a certain number of kids per class too. In regard to other costs, including births, it's not too difficult to find. Which again makes me wonder about your motivation, let alone that you’re words are far more God like than mine. And, I trust more taxpayers agree with this plan.

Politicians, read the newspaper to find out how much money you don't have. Quit wasting our money especially with problems that sound great to solve, but you know that you can't begin to scratch the surface of this enormous problem. The federal government has to do this. Don't waste our money to increase your political standing. Gullable people don't realize how much money you are wasting.

You must be retired and out of touch with reality.
The jobs are probably not on record and if they are using ss numbers that receive payments and taxes are taken out. You can't make up costs you don't know anything about like birthing? How starange? Are you Christian? You act like God. Schools have programs for many legals with help for English. The problem is huge. Don't play games and waste our money.

…then please be sure to include these other costs, that at a minimum should include: jobs filled by illegal workers; tax fraud and lost revenues; money sent out of the U.S. vs. spent here; identity theft and falsification of records; illegal motor vehicle operation, registration and lack of insurance; health care (don’t overlook birthing costs), safety and emergency support costs; educational costs (classrooms, language support, etc.); etc., etc.

I don't think there are enough comments on this issue for it to matter. I would love a vote with the cost to Butler County taxpayers. This would give a clear picture of the total waste of hard earned money. This is politicians using our money to give the impression that they are solving county problems. This is a joke. Quit spending our money for personal gain!

“Do you pay taxes?” The people you want to give a pass too Taxpayer, either under report and/or don’t pay taxes at all costing the U.S. billions each year. And, it all adds up from local communities looking the other way. Regardless, your repeated comments suggest surrender. National polls don’t reflect that view nor likely would a majority of Butler County residents were this put to a vote. And, perhaps that’s were a resolution to all of this should ultimately go.

I can't believe what I am reading. Do you pay taxes?
The costs involved in all of this is enormous!!!!
The federal government should pay for it. I don't want my dollars wasted. The locals make a big deal about arresting two illegals. What happens to them?
No one ever reads that along with the money wasted.
Most stay in the U.S.A. We wasted more money. Great!

Its WAY past due!

The majority of Americans have been wanting something like this done for a couple of years now. But, greed was always the priority between the politicians and business owners.

I wonder why "the obvious" solution is just now being done? Could it be because the illegals are spilling over into the "greedy" ones neighborhood?

Troubling?

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is what is troubling. In spite of their name, they don't care about the U.S. or our LEGAL taxpaying citizens.

The employer and the phony employee should both be put in a make shift jail that resembles Joe Arpaio's tent city in Arizona. After six months release them with a huge fine and make them pay for the cost of their keep.

What is troubling about it?

The less immigrants the better - when will you liberals get this through your head - America will become poor and overcrowded like India and China, and probably work for the same pay. Think about it.

By the way, as previously shared, there’s a wealth of credible information for those interested in finding it. Ask your financial advisor - if you have one, to give you internal white papers on it…it’s freightening, especially since there’s no easy solution. Booting all out isn’t the answer, nor is allowing all to stay as integration costs alone are astronomical. A shrinking U.S. economy holds the best answer as many returned on their own…E-Verify's impact will likely be gradual too.

E-Verify now vigilante justice. How? What burdens do illegals add to local and state entities, here’s two: health care (emergencies, births…) and education (language barriers, facilities, class size...). Taxes, SSI, etc? Billions go unpaid and billions more go directly to their home countries. Mexico gets so much from illegals and other expats that it’s their second source of revenue behind oil…money that’s not spent here. Locals started this by harboring them, and locals need to stop.

How are state and local entities paying for illegals?
They should share their secrets with everyone else.
Many Americans can't get local and state entities to pay for them. Most companies make out very well with illegals. Taxes and social security are taken out of their checks even if it's not their number.
This is just too big a problem for vigilante justice.
I just don't want taxpayer money spent on something that is impossible to solve on the local level.

Anonymous, I only care about my tax dollars in Butler County. I don't know from where your vague information comes. Entities is a vague word. They work for almost nothing without benefits. No one is making billions in Butler County. I don't want my money spent on witch hunts, jail time, court costs, repatriation. Refuse to sponsor the wasting of taxpayer money. This is merely a politicial publicity stunt that can't be solved on the local level.

You're wrong in saying it's only a Federal issue as local and state entities pay to support illegals once here. Plus, they have about 8% of all U.S. jobs, many of them, including many of their employers avoid paying taxes to the tune of billions, and billions more go directly out of the U.S. vs. being spent here. Yet, were supposed to give up becuase it wasn't enacted years ago. Weak. Very weak.

Immigration is a federal job, not a local one. You want to chase more businesses out of Ohio. The economy can't afford this now. This is all to get quick publicity as it always has been. Why didn't you do this 15 years ago? I resent wasting taxpayer money on this national issue. Quit wasting taxpayer dollars on this issue. Crime on average citizens is horrible everywhere. Stop violent crimes!

Yardwinder this is not about legal immigrants America takes in more legal immigrants every year than the rest of the world combined (over 2,000,000)being an college graduate I assume you are in the USA gives you the chance to stay and work and eventualy apply for citizenship.Understand that e-verify is not about keeping legal immigrants out of America, its about keeping illegals out of our jobs we need so badly right now.

It amazes me that a publication whose bread and butter is words finds so much trouble understanding the difference between "immigrant" and "criminal". This legislation is not anti-immigrant. It is anti-criminal. That is what "illegal" refers to. As for the "unintended" nature of the discrimination, I find the argument specious. People who will discriminate need no reason. Thus, the argument that we are giving them a reason is ludicrous.

The Journals position is contimptable.Another examplem of those with a public profile and or position taking a position not based on the public good but in an attempt to avoid critisism for not being compassionate to the "downtrodden".
If we were to follow the money, who would a newspaper rather risk offending, individual citizens, or bussineses that purchase advertising?

Thank GOD for legislator Combs and sheriff Jones for stepping-up to address the derelection of duty of our congress' failure to enforce our immigration laws. We shouldn't need new laws; but until businesses stop rewarding our congressional representatives with cash for "looking the other way", we need Combs and Jones! Thirteen million unemployed Americans will benefit greatly!

This bill is not "troubling". It is very much needed. Most people in this country want a stop to all the freebies given to the illegals such as healthcare, welfare and the illegal pregnant mother coming across the border to give birth so that the child will be a legal U.S.citizen. That is wrong and needs to be changed. Some of these people are treated better than naturalized citizens. It is good that the employer will now be able to check for illegals before hiring.

This is just passing the buck to American companies to do the work of the federal government. It will amount to the same thing as in the past, selective enforcement. It will become a news article and the legal wrangling will take forever. Taxpayers never find out about the end result and the huge costs involved. This is a publicity stunt paid for with taxpayer dollars. Go after people who aren't working who are milking the system.

Thanks for this timely article and thoughtful viewpoints. It's necessary to have a better understanding of the issues surrounding the E-Verify program to fully understand this complex (and politically charged) issue.

It’s troubling it wasn’t done sooner. Credible sources cite Illegal aliens have 8% of all U.S. jobs. Unpaid taxes, etc by both business and Illegals is in the billions and billions more go directly out of the U.S vs. being spent here….talk about a transfer of wealth. Plus, local and state entities pay for illegal’s support. And, the Journal’s top concern is discrimination? Please, that fans flames and pales to the advantage that business and others take of illegals’ vulnerabilities now.

What a lame article e-verify has been proven to work and is 99% acurate thats why the liberals are fighting it.This is about 15 years past due but at a time when hundreds of thousands of American Citizens are loosing their jobs every month we need to start insuring that if any one is hired they need to be a Citizen or have legal status.

Great program! When it comes to illegal immigration all we hear from the left is they are only taking jobs that no one here will take. It's the lefts way of obscurring the massive amounts of public services the tax payers have to put out for the illegals. California is being sent $21 Billion of your dollars for decisions they make about illegals.

The Ohio Bill is long over due! Combs & Jones are to be commended. I disagree with most of your concerns. Any new requirement will always be challenged as being too expensive & too much control - but this Bill, in fact, is neither! This Bill is not anti-immigrant, just anti illegal immigrant. It is time to stop businesses that compete unfairly, by paying substandard wages!
