Now that the Nov. 3 election is in the history books, it’s time to direct attention to one of those other annual rituals of November — high school football playoffs.

This year, Middletown-area football fans have plenty to cheer about, starting tonight, Nov. 6.

That’s when the Monroe Hornets return to the Division III playoffs to take on Chaminade-Julienne at 7:30 p.m. today in Dayton. Monroe is 8-2 and seeded No. 6; Chaminade-Julienne is also 8-2 but is seeded No. 3. Good luck, Hornets.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, three games will have the attention of local football fans. All three start at 7 p.m.

Perennial powerhouse Valley View (7-3) will travel to Kenton (9-1) in Division IV’s Region 16. Kenton and Valley View are the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively.

Meanwhile, also in Region 16 of Division IV, the Carlisle Indians (8-2) will go to North College Hill (10-0) in Cincinnati. Despite its perfect record, North College Hill is the third seed, while Carlisle is No. 6.

And how about those Middies?

Middletown High is in the playoffs for the first time since 1990, with a 9-1 record, but this exciting and dynamic 2009 Middies team will have their hands full with the always strong Moeller Crusaders (9-1). Moeller is the No. 2 seed in Division I’s Region 4, and the Middies are the No. 7 seed.

Whatever the outcome of Saturday’s game, the Middies have brought that pride back to Middletown, providing the town with a memorable season. An upset of Moeller on Saturday would be huge.

We applaud the successful seasons for which all of these coaches and teams have worked so hard, and — win or lose this weekend — they have provided their fans, parents and friends with exciting memories and generated tremendous spirit in their communities.

And we would be remiss if we did not tip our hats to all the other teams that did not qualify for the playoffs this year, and to the many other fall teams whose athletes also dedicate themselves to their sport and schools.

Of course, we hope you will follow your favorite team in our pages and on our Web site
(www.middletownjournal.com) this weekend for the best coverage of the playoff games.

We wish the best of luck to all the local teams playing this weekend. You’ve made your communities proud and given local football fans a November weekend to remember. Go Middies.

I agree, a tip of the hat to the Edgewood football team. You play on a SEVEN HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND dollar field and look how you finished!!! OH,JEESH, this cracks me up!!
