Maytag recalls 1.6 million refrigerators
Maytag Corp. is recalling about 1.6 million refrigerators because of a fire hazard, after receiving dozens of customer reports that part of the appliance ignited, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The electrical problem could cause the relay, which turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, to overheat and start a fire, the release said Tuesday, March 10.
According to the CPSC, Maytag has received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
The recall includes certain Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators. Refrigerators with freezers on the bottom are not included in the recall, the release said.
These refrigerators were sold by department and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide from January 2001 through January 2004 for between about $350 and $1,600.
Consumers should immediately contact Maytag at (866) 533-9817 or www.repair.maytag.com to determine if their refrigerator is included in the recall and to schedule a free in-home repair.
Customers should not return the refrigerator to the store where it was purchased.

I am outraged! We just had Sears come in mid Feb. and the repair man was upset with me that the refrigerator wasn’t left on. He said that it should always be left on in order for them to find the problem. I told him that I didn’t think it should be plugged in for 2 days before he could get to us with it smelling like something was burnt. To his surprise, the relay was totally black and melted. He then said… well if you smell something hot, you should turn it off. Duh? My question is, do I get my $241 back for his 20 mins. of time on a now recalled refrigerator?
