In a story that will publish in the July 10 issue of the Monroe Pulse-Journal, Reporter Denise Wilson talks to the Monroe school district’s treasurer Kelley Thorpe about levies that will drop off in upcoming years. Here is an excerpt from the story:
The Monroe Local Schools Board of Education has been weighing its options to determine what steps it needs to take to replace three emergency operating levies due to expire in 2010 and 2011, and to offset projected future budget deficits.
The three levies that raise $1.5 million, $1.1 million and $930,000, annually are used to fund operating expenses such as utilities, books and teachers salaries, said Kelley Thorpe, district treasurer. The five-year levies were first approved in 2005 and 2006, Thorpe said.
“We know we’ve got these levies that are coming off in those two years and that’s a substantial amount of money for us,” she said.
“We also know that expenses — teacher salaries, health insurance, gas, money to buy food and books — have gone up so much, and with the loss of open enrollment income, just renewing those three levies is not enough money. We need additional money.”
Thorpe said if the $1.5 million levy — due to expire in 2010 — is not renewed by the district by that year, it would face a projected budget deficit of $1.3 million.

So, there won’t be any alcohol permitted at this year’s Light Up the Sky event in Monroe July 4-5. We know you’ll go anyway. Right? What are your thoughts? Should they have allowed beer sales?
