Playing sports is a traditional part of any weekend, but Memorial Day weekend in Middletown offers residents a chance to play with the help of a pro.

Darrell Hunter Community Weekend will take place Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, at Douglass Park, with different activities on each day.

On Saturday, events kick off at 9 a.m. with a breast cancer walk for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Kelvin Moss, an organizer of the events, hopes that if people come out for one event, it should be that one.

"We would like all the parents and kids to participate in the walk. We think that's very important," Moss said.

At about 10 a.m., there will be a free youth football camp with Hunter, a former Middie football standout and Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Then, a keynote speaker to be determined will give an address.

Next up will be a flag football game for youths, followed at 1 p.m. by an adult basketball tournament for ages 18 and up. The cost to play in that tournament is $75; with the winner receiving $500 in Reebok merchandise.

On Sunday at noon, Hunter will have a meet and greet and sign autographs at Rosa Parks Elementary School. At 1 p.m., there will be a charity basketball game, with players from 1980s and 90s Middletown teams on one side, and more recent graduates on the other. Admission to that game will be one canned good to be donated to the Dream Center, the soup kitchen founded by Louella Thompson.

For more information, call Moss at (480) 374-0012.
