FRANKLIN — City officials will consider plans to construct a new retail center on East Second Street.

Columbus-based Northstar Realt Inc. submitted plans to tear down three houses and construct a new 12,715-square-foot retail center with six shops and one restaurant, which the planning commission will review at its meeting meeting today, May 12.

Although exactly what will fill the shops has not yet been worked out, the development, which would have a new address of 1282 E. Second St., would be brick with a stone material around the roof line, said city Economic Development Director Mike Robinette.

"I think it will be an attractive development," Robinette said, noting the exterior will be compatible with neighboring businesses such as Walgreens and Wal-Mart.

Robinette said the area is already zoned for a commercial business, and the plans may not have to come before the entire City Council for approval.

Councilman Todd Hall, who has been vocal about his desire for another restaurant in the city, said the retail center is a step in the right direction and he is eager to see what Northstar is willing to bring to the city.

"It's going to be a good thing," Hall said. "It will be a nice addition."

Councilman Denny Centers said he predicts the development won't be the last to come into the area.

"I think you're going to see much more," Centers said.
