MIDDLETOWN — Police believe a tire may have crossed six lanes of traffic from southbound to northbound Interstate 75 to strike a car early Tuesday morning, according to WKRC Channel 12.
A truck going southbound had lost a tire near the scene of the car with a windshield shattered by an object, but the Ohio State Highway Patrol has not been able to confirm what caused the accident. The truck had recovered its tire and was fixing it while emergency crews responded to the scene across the highway.
Two women were transported to Miami Valley Hospital with undisclosed injuries after their car was struck by an unidentified metallic object while traveling north on Interstate 75 between Ohio 122 and Ohio 123.
“The damage is conducive to something big and heavy,” said Lt. Anthony Lauer of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Post in Lebanon.
Driver Penny Coffman of Stevenson, Ala., was treated and released Tuesday morning, Sept. 7, said Emily Blayney, administrative officer of the hospital. The status of passenger Linda Angel of South Lyon, Mich., is unknown, Blayney said.
The accident happened at about 12:29 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, near mile marker 34 between Middletown and Franklin, according to Trooper Mike Hively of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Lebanon Post. That’s when something struck the Chevy Aveo the women were riding in, shattering the front windshield and caving in the roof, Hively said.
Coffman and Angel were transported to the hospital in separate ambulances shortly before 12:40 a.m.
The Franklin Twp. Fire Department also responded to the scene. Hively said he did not know the extent of the women’s injuries.
“Whatever it was, it came through the window,” Hively said.
The accident remains under investigation.
