Winton Woods too much for Edgewood

By Tyler Waddell

Winton Woods did its best impression of the Oregon Ducks’ football team Friday night, routing Edgewood 50-7 in the first round of the Division II Region 8 Ohio state playoffs.

The second-seeded Warriors, who led 50-0 at halftime, scored in nearly every possible fashion. They found the end zone on offense, defense and special teams (including a safety) — all with 4:02 minutes of possession in the first half.

It was a collective team effort to say the least and the reserves were in to start the third quarter.

“They’re a great football team,” said Scott Clemmons, who finished up his first season with the seventh-seeded Cougars. “They do things well and they get after you and they just keep coming and coming.”

Winton Woods quarterback Shemar Hooks worked the sidelines to perfection by rushing for 151 yards and three touchdowns off six carries in just one half of action.

The backfield finished with a total of 322 yards and an average of 9.2 per carry as Edgewood had no answer for the Warriors’ elite triple-option offense.

“I’m very excited about how (we) played tonight,” said Winton Woods coach Andre Parker. “Our kids were able to put it together through hard work and sacrifice.”

Edgewood was outgained 324-205 and held to just 10 first downs, as the running tandem of A.J. Pieratt and Matt Barger were unable to break an extremely fast and versatile Warriors defensive front seven.

The Cougars end a very successful campaign with an 8-3 overall record after reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Although they lose a hefty senior class (25), Clemmons expects to make another run in 2013.

“These (seniors) showed the underclassmen how to play the game of football — not just on the field, but in the community, the classroom and in the hallways at school,” Clemmons said. “That’s what this class is going to leave. It’s not just a great football team, but it’s their overall character of being young men.

“It was a great season,” he added. “We challenged the boys. They stepped up to the challenge and did everything we asked them to do this year.”

Winton Woods will play Trotwood-Madison — the defending D-II state champions — in the Region 8 quarterfinals next Friday at a site yet to be determined.
