Area football power rankings: Week 9

By Staff

Division I

1. Springboro (8-0): The Panthers’ defense finally bent a bit but still managed a 49-26 defeat of Miamisburg last week. Remain one game up in the GWOC South division. Have vaulted to third in the Region 4 computer rankings; host Xenia.

2. Lakota West (8-0): Firebirds finish the regular season with a couple of heavyweight bouts, at unbeaten Colerain for at least a share of the GMC title tonight and host Lakota East in Week 10.

3. Wayne (6-2): Warriors, currently fifth, probably secured a spot in the Region 4 playoffs following a convincing 26-10 victory at Centerville that was sparked by Jesse Bray’s three-TD career effort; host Fairmont.

4. Centerville (5-3): Elks, at No. 11 in the Region 4 rankings, must win out and need a lot of help to make the postseason. That begins with a visit to Beavercreek tonight with the loser dropping out of GWOC Central contention.

5. Northmont (5-3): The Thunderbolts join Wayne, Beavercreek and Centerville at 2-1 in the GWOC Central standings. Host Springfield and are at Wayne in Week 10, which will determine their division and postseason status.

Others: Beavercreek, Fairborn, Fairfield, Fairmont, Hamilton, Lakota East, Lebanon, Mason, Middletown, Northmont, Springfield, Troy, Xenia.

Division II

1. Trotwood-Madison (6-2): Rams’ offense has clicked during a five-game win streak. However, they remain stuck at No. 7 in Region 8. Despite winning out, Trotwood probably will be overtaken by unbeaten Western Brown should it beat Batavia (8-0) and/or Norwood (7-1); host Sidney.

2. Franklin (7-1): Wildcats have won five straight but were pushed to the limit at Eaton last week, winning 13-12. No. 4 in Region 8; at Brookville (6-2), looking to clinch a share of the WEBL Southwestern title.

3. Tecumseh (6-2): Arrows handed Tippecanoe its first loss last week in OT 24-21 and climb to No. 7 in Region 7; host Bellefontaine.

4. Tippecanoe (7-1): Red Devils host Kenton Ridge (6-2) in the second of three straight regular season-ending matchups that will decide their playoff fate.

5. Edgewood (6-2): Cougars, currently No. 11 in Region 8, can get back into the playoff picture by winning at unbeaten Mount Healthy (8-0).

Others: Bellbrook, Greenville, Kings, Little Miami, Piqua, Ross, Sidney, Stebbins, Talawanda, Vandalia Butler, West Carrollton.

Division III

1. Thurgood Marshall (7-1): Cougars have won three straight and play Dunbar at Welcome Stadium tonight in what likely will decide the Dayton City League title. Both teams are 2-0 in the league with two games remaining.

2. Alter (7-0-1): Knights blew out Carroll 48-0 in the first leg of a regular season-ending GCL North stretch. Host Fenwick (6-2) at Fairmont.

3. Urbana (7-1): High-scoring Hillclimbers have scored 41 or more points in all of their wins. Bring a six-game win streak against visiting Indian Lake (5-3). The winner secures a share of the CBC Mad River title.

4. Springfield Shawnee (5-3): Braves must get past Stebbins today and knock off Tippecanoe in Week 10 to have a shot at returning to the playoffs.

5. Kenton Ridge (6-2): Surging Cougars knock Eaton out of the rankings. KR will make or break its postseason hopes at Tipp today and by hosting Tecumseh in Week 10.

Others: Bellefontaine, Carroll, Dunbar, Eaton, Graham, Kenton Ridge, Meadowdale, Monroe, Oakwood.

Division IV

1. Fenwick (6-2): Falcons inherit the top spot following a convincing 35-7 defeat of Chaminade Julienne and losses by previous No. 1 Milton-Union and Brookville. No celebrating that landmark win with unbeaten Alter on deck tonight at Fairmont.

2. Milton-Union (6-2): Bulldogs overtake the top spot for the first time after previously leader CJ fell to Badin. Milton has won four straight and lost only to unbeaten Tipp; hosts Dixie (5-2).

3. Carlisle (6-2): Indians should prevail against winless Preble Shawnee tonight. That would set up a playoff-determining Week 10 game at Dixie (6-2).

4. Chaminade Julienne (5-3): Losses to Badin and Fenwick the last two weeks have dropped the Eagles to No. 14 in Region 16 and likely out of playoff contention; vs. Carroll at Northridge.

5. Brookville (6-2): Blue Devils might have been looking forward to hosting Franklin tonight when they were stunned 30-7 at Bellbrook last week.

Others: Badin, Greeneview, Greenon, Madison, Northeastern, Northridge, Northwestern, Ponitz Tech, Preble Shawnee, Valley View.

Division V

1. Coldwater (8-0): Cavaliers have clinched at least a share of the MAC title and their 16th consecutive playoff appearance. Coach Chip Otten will secure his first conference championship should the Cavs win at Parkway.

2. Covington (8-0): Buccaneers put a season-high 78 points on upstart National Trail last week and secured a tie for the CCC title. Can win it outright with a victory at Ansonia.

3. West Liberty-Salem (8-0): Like Coldwater and Covington, Tigers control their own region 20 destiny. Should roll against Cedarville (1-6-1) today, then it’s a Week 10 showdown for the OHC title against visiting Triad (7-1).

4. Dayton Christian (8-0): The independent Warriors still haven’t clinched their first playoff spot despite a No. 4 ranking in Region 20. That’s because only two of their opponents own winning records; played Belmont on Thursday.

5. Versailles (5-3): Tigers tumble from No. 3 after falling to Delphos St. John’s 20-18. No. 11 in Region 20, can get back into the playoff hunt by beating visiting Minster (6-2) tonight and winning at St. Henry (5-3) next week.

Others: Anna, Bethel, Dixie, Miami East, National Trail, Triad, Twin Valley South.

Division VI

1. Marion Local (6-2): Flyers retain the top spot despite a 27-0 setback to Coldwater. Have slipped to No. 3 in the Region 24 computer rankings; host Anna.

2. Minster (6-2): Wildcats have won three straight and would clinch a Region 24 playoff berth by winning at Versailles tonight and beating St. John’s next week.

3. Fort Loramie (6-2): Redskins have shot to No. 1 in Region 24; at Ridgemont.

4. St. Henry (5-3): Redskins snapped a two-game skid against winless Parkway, 34-8; at Fort Recovery.

5. Bradford (6-2): The Railroaders had a three-game win streak undone by Miami East, 33-14, and fall from No. 3; host winless Mississinawa Valley.

Others: Ansonia, Arcanum, Cedarville, Central Catholic, Cin. Christian, Fort Recovery, Jefferson, Lehman Catholic, Mississinawa Valley, New Bremen, New Miami, Southeastern, Tri-County North.
