CINCINNATI —
Already riding a high after making his NFL debut Sunday in Cleveland, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Dontay Moch’s week got a lot more memorable Thursday when his girlfriend Sarah gave birth to their first child, an 8-pound, 11-ounce baby girl named Jaylynn.
“I’m ecstatic,” Moch said. “It’s been a hell of a week.”
Moch missed practice Wednesday and was listed as “Non-Injury Related” on the injury report because he was with Sarah at Christ Hospital for the start of what would be 28 hours of labor.
“She’s a champion to go through it, she really is,” Moch said. “That’s the only reason I wasn’t here. I just had to be my lady’s support. Had to be there.”
Moch said he hadn’t slept in 32 hours by the time he arrived in the Bengals locker room just after 11 a.m. Thursday.
“I’m running on fumes,” he said. “Yeah I’m a little tired, but I’m here to do my job and that’s what I’m going to do. I’m just blessed and honored to keep doing what I’m here for. Now I have more of a motive and drive to get out there and provide. I’ve got mouths to feed.”
The Bengals’ third-round pick in 2011, Moch was inactive for all 16 games last year and the first five this season. He played four snaps on defense and 13 on special teams against the Browns.
“I got to finally get out there and get the rust off of me and finally starting doing what I’ve been waiting for so long to do,” Moch said. “Then following up being a father, it’s something I can’t even explain. It’s just a shocking feeling going through it, just to be there and experience it all.”
Prime time problems
Prime time has not been kind to the Bengals over the years, and neither have the Pittsburgh Steelers. So it’s no surprise when the two are combined, the results have not been favorable.
In addition to losing nine of their last 11 games against the Steelers, the Bengals have dropped three in a row in prime time. And they are 4-8 all-time under the lights against their division rivals.
The last such win was a 27-9 triumph at Three Rivers Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 19, 1995.
Overall the Bengals have lost eight consecutive prime time games and 10 of their last 12.Under Marvin Lewis they are 4-10.
Their most recent victory in prime time came in the 2007 season opener when they beat Baltimore 27-20 at Paul Brown Stadium on Monday Night Football.
The last time Cincinnati won on a Sunday night was Sept. 19, 2004, a 16-13 triumph against Miami at Paul Brown Stadium.
Injury update
Running back Brian Leonard missed practice for the second day in a row Thursday, leaving his status for Sunday’s game against the Steelers in doubt. Leonard left the game in Cleveland in the second quarter and did not return after re-aggravating a rib injury.
Wide receiver Armon Binns (ankle) also did not practice Thursday. Wide receiver Andrew Hawkins (back), defensive tackle Devon Still (shoulder) and guard Kevin Zeitler (elbow) were full participants after being limited Wednesday.
Center Kyle Cook, who is on the Injured Reserve-Designated for Return list, is eligible to resume practice this week but doesn’t expect to be ready for awhile. He has traded his knee scooter for a crutch, which means he will be able to be on the sideline for the first time Sunday night.
Cook is eligible to play Nov. 4 against Denver, but that is a long shot. Once he is cleared to practice, the team will have three weeks to add him to the active roster or shelve him for the season.
