Ohio State sophomore Braxton Miller set a school record for total offense this season and was named Monday as the Big Ten quarterback of the year.

He’ll have to do a little more, though, if he wants to meet coach Urban Meyer’s standards for the position.

During a press conference before the league honors were announced, Meyer had tepid praise for his QB and graded the Buckeyes’ passing game this season as a “C or C-minus.”

He was more complimentary of Miller while appearing on the Big Ten Network awards show Monday night. Well, sort of.

Asked what struck him about the Wayne High School product when they first met, Meyer said: “I saw all the measurable talents we look for — just the great athleticism, he’s got a tremendous release and arm strength. And the No. 1 thing I saw after we got to know him a little bit is he’s as competitive a guy as I’ve ever been around.”

But Meyer wants more out of Miller.

“Braxton is a unique athlete,” he said. “He’s had great success throughout his life. He’s just better than most guys. He’s faster, more athletic, great acceleration. … (But) the days of running around and making plays are starting to end because defenses or so good, athletes are so good. So instead of an athlete that plays quarterback, we need a quarterback who’s a pretty good athlete. We’re not there yet. We still have so far to go. But he certainly has all the values we’re looking for in a quarterback.”

Miller rushed for 1,271 yards and passed for 2,039, surpassing Bobby Hoying’s record for total offense of 3,290, which has stood since 1995.

He was selected first-team All-Big Ten by the media and second team by the coaches. Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez earned the coaches’ first-team nod. Miller earned the quarterback of the year award by having the most combined votes.

OSU senior John Simon was named Big Ten defensive lineman of the year after leading the conference with nine sacks.

Sophomore linebacker Ryan Shazier, who was first in the league with 17 tackles for loss and tied for second with 115 tackles, and sophomore defensive back Bradley Roby, who had a league-high 19 passes defended, were named all-league first team along with junior defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins, junior guard Andrew Norwell and senior defensive back Travis Howard.

Four juniors were named to the All-Big Ten second team: running back Carlos Hyde, left tackle Jack Mewhort, safety Christian Bryant and receiver Corey Brown. Junior safety C.J. Barnett, a Northmont product, was named honorable mention all-conference.
