Lebanon surges past Troy

By Staff

After dropping their first two games by double digits and seeing their slim lead disappear Friday, the Lebanon High School boys basketball team decided they’d had enough.

A key second-quarter surge gave Lebanon a cushion, then the Warriors pulled away in the fourth for a 49-34 win in a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover game. After Troy took its only lead of the game — 15-14 with six minutes left in the first half — Lebanon responded by ripping off a 14-3 run.

The win was Lebanon’s first (1-2) following a 14-point loss to Springfield and a 12-point loss to Mason.

“I think these guys are sick and tired of losing,” Lebanon coach Matt Higgins said of the difference on Friday. “Two teams got in our face and we decided that’s what we needed to do to everybody else.”

Lebanon’s Zach Beckner took over in the fourth quarter with 12 of his game-high 16 points. His basket with 5:51 to play gave the Warriors a 37-26 double-digit lead they never lost. Bradd Ellis and Ben Esposito both added 11 points.

Carlisle 94, Northridge 85, 2 OT: Andrew Goodpaster had 33 points and Braden Lieungh added 28 to keep the Indians unbeaten in double-overtime. After Northridge missed a shot at the buzzer in regulation, Carlisle (3-0) missed a buzzer-beater of its own in the first overtime before pulling away in the second. Nate Jackson led Northridge (0-3) with 22 points.

Wayne 64, Springboro 61: Springboro lost for the first time this season despite 23 points and 11 rebounds from Maverick Morgan. Ryan Murray added 19 points for the Panthers (2-1). D’Mitrick Trice scored 15 points to lead the Warriors (3-0), who grabbed 18 offensive rebounds.

Valley View 68, Monroe 58: Senior Zack Denny led the Spartans with 27 points in their home opener. Ethan Brown added 11 points for Valley View (1-0). Chris Sloneker led the Hornets (1-2) with 23 points.

Milton-Union 40, Madison 34: Dakota Albaugh scored 18 points and Ben Seltzer added 11 for Milton-Union (1-0), which pulled away with late free throws. Tre Owens had 18 points and four assists for Madison (0-3).
