Valley View, Madison repeat as MUM winners

By Dave Long

MIDDLETOWN —

Valley View and Middletown Madison showed it is possible to claim girls holiday high school basketball tournament titles without scoring points Saturday night.

Both were repeat winners in their respective divisions of the 34th Miami University-Middletown event.

Valley View (8-1) had one field goal in the fourth quarter of a 30-18 victory over Fenwick (4-6) in the small-school division.

Fenwick was even more inept from floor with three field goals in the last 28:16 of the 32-minute game.

Madison handed Holy Cross of Covington, Ky., its first loss, 40-32, going without a field goal in the last 11:55.

Both teams are 10-1.

It is the first time since the 2002 and 2003 seasons there have been back-to-back winners in the area’s oldest girls holiday tournament held at Bennett Hall on the MUM campus

Edgewood was the big school consolation winner, defeating Cincinnati Western Hills, 51-43. Preble Shawnee took third place on the small school division, 39-38 over The Miami Valley School.

“We were rolling. Then all of a sudden we couldn’t buy a basket,” said Madison coach John Rossi. “And it wasn’t like we were taking bad shots. We missed at least six bunnies right under the basket.

“But I have to give Holy Cross credit. They went into a match-up zone that gave us problems and they never quit.”

After the score was tied at 16-16 at 4:10 of the second quarter, Madison couldn’t miss, going on a 21-2 run for 37-18 lead. The Mohawks’ last basket was a 3-pointer by Meghan Miller at 3:55 in the third quarter.

For the rest of the night Madison was 0-for-18 from the floor.

Holy Cross, with DeAsia Beal scoring 10 of her 17 points in the second half, got within 37-32 with 1:26 to go.

Madison’s Michelle Brunswick then got a hand on a Holly Cross pass into the post, tapped it away and came up with a steal. She was fouled with 1:15 go go and made a free throw for her team’s first point of the fourth quarter.

“Huge play,” said Rossi. “Huge play. If they get a 3 on that possession with more than a minute to go, it’s anybody’s game.

Michelle doesn’t score a lot of points. But she’s invaluable as a defender and rebounder.”

Olivia Philpot led Madison with 12 points followed by Kaylee Bush with 11.

Valley View had practiced only once in the last 10 days and the rust showed vs. Fenwick in the form of 22-percent shooting. The Spartans’ only basket of the fourth quarter came with 6:40 left from Alexis Stidham.

Thankfully for the Spartans, Fenwick went 2-of-21 from the field in the second half.
