Tough night at state for local wrestlers

COLUMBUS —

Franklin High School senior Chase Henderson saw his quest for a title at the state wrestling meet end in disappointment. Carlisle sophomore Jason Sandlin’s ended with devastation.

Sandlin had a 2-1 lead against Edgerton’s Jared VanVleet late in their Division III 132-pound semifinal match, but the 50-0 senior reversed Sandlin to his back with two seconds left for a stunning 5-2 victory Friday at the Schottenstein Center.

“He struggled in the past riding me, but right there at the end he stopped my standups like three times so I had to resort to something else,” VanVleet said. “He got flat with his feet, so I caught one.”

Carlisle senior Marcus Smith (195) lost in the semifinals, suffering a pin in 2:25, while junior teammate Jimmy Sandlin battled back through the consolation bracket. All three can finish anywhere from third to sixth when action resumes today at 10 a.m. This is the first time in school history the Indians have had three placers.

While Sandlin — who placed third at 126 last year — was visibly crushed by his loss, Henderson was reflective following an 8-3 setback to Whitehall-Yearling senior Alex Farrow in the Division II 285-pound bracket.

“It’s disappointing,” Henderson said. “I did not wrestle up to my potential at all. I’ve been wrestling right close to the line. I won my first match by a point and my second one in triple overtime, ultimate tiebreaker. I had to ride the kid. I wrestled two tough matches, and I guess I didn’t eat the right stuff because I didn’t have the energy to go out and do what I normally do.”

Like the Carlisle trio, Henderson can place anywhere from third to sixth depending on how he does this morning, making him the first Franklin heavyweight to reach the state podium since Zach Katris took fourth in 2003.

“Knowing that I should be in the finals is going to bother me all night,” Henderson said. “But I’ve always been someone who has prided myself in being headstrong not matter what the situation was.

“Keep going and keep doing your best, that’s what’s got me this far in the first place,” he continued. “I’ve been down in plenty of matches this year and come back and won. So I know I can come back and win one match, and hopefully two to get third place.”
