Rossi overcomes illness to win tournament

MADISON TWP. —

It was not the best of days to be on a golf course for Chris Rossi.

Rossi, who entered the final day of the Dr. James L. Sawyer Jr. Memorial Junior Medal Play Championship at Weatherwax with a two-shot lead, had to battle more than the rest of the field.

The Fairfield senior was battling a bug that made him sick on the course.

“You try to think about your next shot and then you are thinking you are going to get sick,” Rossi said. “It was tough, but I was still playing well. I just had to make sure I parred the first hole. I knew if I did that, I would be able to get through it.”

Rossi carded a 74 en route to a six-stroke win over Erik Gregory and Brad Payntor.

“Brad played well and Erik started out well,” Rossi said. “It was fun to watch them because they were close all day.”

Payntor made up the four-stroke deficit on Gregory with a 74 to force a sudden death playoff for second place in the 17-18 age division. The Carlisle senior birdied the third playoff hole to take second.

“I knew I had to beat Erik by four and the last hole, he was up three,” Payntor said. “I didn’t think about the score at the moment. I was just trying to take it hole by hole and hit the best shot I can.”

Payntor could have made a run at Rossi, but made just three of 15 birdie attempts on the day.

“You can’t think ahead,” Payntor said. “It gets too frustrating if you get behind. You have to take it hole by hole.”

Danny Meyer made a run at the overall title with a 74-72-146 to win the 15-16 age division by 13 strokes over James Leisinger.

“It was close overall,” Meyer said. “I was just trying to have a decent round; nothing fancy. I ended up having a pretty good round.”

Meyer hopes the his 2-over total over two rounds is a good indication for tryouts in early August.

“Hopefully, I will start out well for the team,” Meyer said. “We are going to have a good team anyway at Lakota East. Hopefully, we can win four in a row (Greater Miami Conference titles). That would be nice.”

Josh Gilkison claimed the 13-14 division by 17 strokes after finishing with a 157 while Jonathan Lloyd took a 15-stroke win in the 12-and-under division.

Emily Giles recovered to claim the girls title. Giles held a nine-stroke lead heading into the day, but saw Hannah McCrabb make up the difference with a 102 to tie after two days with a 215. Giles parred the first sudden-death playoff hole to take the title.

Rossi is excited about getting his senior season started, but on Tuesday had one thing on his mind.

“I am going to go home and sleep,” Rossi said. “I still don’t fell good, but this (winning the championship) feels good.”
