MUM tourney kicks off Friday

By John Cummings

The 34th annual Miami University-Middletown Holiday Tournament will tip off today at 2 p.m.

“It is hard to believe it has been that long,” MUM Athletic Director Cheryl Miller said. “But it is good PR for the campus and showcases what we have here. It is hard to believe it has been 34 years … it has become a long standing accomplishment, for sure.”

Fenwick will square off against Miami Valley in the first contest, making the the Falcons the lone team in the field to have competed in all 34 tournaments. Fenwick won the inaugural tournament in 1979, and in 2010, won the big school division title.

Defending small school champ Valley View follows Fenwick with a 3:45 game against Preble Shawnee. Defending big school champ Madison closes the first night out at 7:15 against Western Hills. Edgewood faces Holy Cross (Ky.) at 5:30 in the first game of the big school division.

The championship games are set for 5:30 p.m. (small school) and 7:15 p.m. (big school) Saturday.

“We have tried to have good competition every year,” Miller said. “It gets tougher and tougher to get it done, but we really like having the local schools in the tournament.”

While Fenwick has been a constant, other teams have changed over the years. Middletown won the first big school title, but has since stopped playing in the tournament. Trotwood, Mason and Ursuline also have made stops through the tournament over the years.

“We have had some notable teams, but have had some different teams here,” Miller said. “We do like to keep it local because they are the ones who come here and it gives us a chance to showcase our program as well. We have had plenty of players who played in the tournament who have become a part of our program over the years.”
