The 14th annual Middletown High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction class features two brothers, several district champions and state qualifiers and an Olympic gold medalist.
Emerson Langster (Class of 1964) earned nine varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball for the Middies.He also was a member of the 1963 basketball team that finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the state polls.
Mike Gomia (Class of 1966) earned six varsity letters in football and baseball. He later coached the Middie softball team and spent many hours coaching young athletes in football and baseball.
Donnie Howard (Class of 1974) earned five varsity letters in football, basketball and track. He averaged 11.5 yards per carry as a running back and earned All-Greater Miami Conference honors his junior year.
Tammy Fisher McMonigle (Class of 1976) won five varsity letters in track, softball and diving. She was a member of the first competitive girls track team and qualified for the state meet on the 4x100 and 4x220 relay teams. She also was the GMC champion in diving her senior year.
Larry and Barry James (Class of 1981) received nine varsity letters each in football, basketball and track. Both were recognized as all-district football players in their junior and seniors seasons. They also were twice state champions in track as members of the 4x400 relay team in their junior and senior seasons.
Daryl Calhoun (Class of 1981) was a five-time varsity award winner in football and track. He was named All-GMC in football his junior and senior seasons. He also earned All-District and All-State honors his senior year.
Katrina Poff Towle (Class of 1989) earned six varsity letters in softball and volleyball. As a senior pitcher, she posted a 10-3 record in leading the Middies to a district championship.
Kayla Harrison is being honored as the first honorary member of the Hall of Fame. Harrison started judo at age 7 and moved to the New England area early in her high school career to continue her training. This past summer in the 2012 London Olympics, Harrison became the first U.S. competitor to win a gold medal in the judo competition.
Steve Dillman will also be recognized as the winner of this year’s Ed “Skeeter” Payne Middie Spirit Award. He is a lifetime resident and business owner in Middletown who faithfully attends Middie football and basketball games and has shown his support through generous donations and with his time by serving on more than 30 committees and boards over the years.
