Middletown senior wrestlers finish strong at home

By John Cummings

MIDDLETOWN —

Normally, Middletown senior LaTrell Davis would have savored the moment of his final match in his own gymnasium.

Saturday at the Middletown Invitational, however, Davis was as anxious as everyone else to watch the match after his.

“I wanted to get off the mat fast so I could watch this match,” Davis said, nodding toward the mat where classmate Jacob Globke and Monroe’s Chris Wilson, returning state placers, were squaring off.

Globke made it a clean sweep of titles for the Middie seniors, using an escape, takedown and backpoints in the second period to break open a scoreless match for a 14-0 win at 160.

“You get those points and it can break someone mentally,” Globke said. “I think I am on the perfect path (for the end of the season); it is time to kick it up some now.”

Davis claimed the 152 title, needing just 1:45 to secure the fall.

“I wanted to leave my mark in here,” Davis said. “It’s sad. Everyone says they can’t wait until they’re seniors, but it is not what they all think it is — it’s sad; it’s hard.”

Colin Wilson was one of three Monroe wrestlers to claim a title, winning at 145 with a fall in 1:48 to help the Hornets to a second-place finish with 285 points. Stebbins won the title with 382.5 points.

“I wanted to hit some moves that I haven’t hit in awhile,” Wilson said. “I have been working hard; you don’t win a tournament without working hard in the wrestling room.”

Ben Braun (195) and Travis Young (220) also claimed titles for the Hornets.

“I didn’t expect to do as well as we did today,” Monroe coach Justin Wilson said. “The three that won it are arguably the three hardest workers we have in the wrestling room. Their success is because they have been putting in the time.”

Middletown claimed four titles in all. Anthony Jagel built a 19-5 lead in his 106 final with Monroe’s Ryan Arnold in 3:01 while Cody Back claimed his first title this season, winning it all at 120.

“I had to have one for the season,” Back said. “It (felt) pretty good (to win at home) with the crowd behind you.”

The Middies finished fifth with 212 points despite having just six wrestlers.

“It’s what we have been doing all year,” Middletown coach Nick Reiter said. “We only have five guys, but they have really been putting the work in and have gone through it like brothers.”
