CINCINNATI —

An up-and-down season for the Middletown boys basketball team ended badly Friday night.

The No. 12 seed, Middletown never could find its rhythm or its shooting touch and Kings was more than happy to capitalize and pull off a 63-51 upset in Division I sectional tournament play at Oak Hills High School.

The No. 25 seed, Kings used a 16-1 run that ended the third quarter and extended midway through the final stanza to snare a 49-41 lead that didn’t dip below five the rest of the way.

“Give Kings credit,” Middletown coach Josh Andrews said. “We wanted to wear on them in the second half but for whatever reason we just couldn’t find the bucket and then they got hot.”

Josh Woody poured in 13 of his game-high 18 points in the second half while Nathan Pucke added 14 of his 16 in the final two quarters. Jamison Williams chipped in 15 for the Knights, who won their fourth in a row to improve to 12-11.

Middletown received eight points from both Jalin Marshall and Vincent Edwards but the duo combined to hit 6-of-32 from the floor.

The Middies struggled all night, hitting 18-of-71 from the floor, including 7-of-32 from beyond the arc.

“That tells the story,” Andrews said. “We had plenty of makable shots but we just couldn’t convert and then our defensive energy deflated when they made their run.”

The Middies shrugged off some early struggles to take a 30-22 halftime lead after Kyle Rouse hit two treys as part of a 8-0 run to end the first half.

Middletown extended the lead to 33-21 before Kings began the comeback.

The Middies still held a 40-33 lead late in the third quarter before Kings went on the big run that ended the Purple’s season at 12-11.
