Middies, Falcons win titles in Florida

By John Cummings

Middletown boys basketball coach Josh Andrews was looking for improvement as the Middies headed to the Rock Holiday Classic last week in Coconut Creek, Fla.

A tournament championship was a bonus.

The Middies claimed the title with a 67-65 Saturday night over North Broward (Fla.) Prep. Chance Sorrell scored the game-winning basket with 6 seconds left and teammate Vincent Edwards blocked a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Middies (6-5).

“I think maybe the ball is bouncing our way now,” Middletown coach Josh Andrews said after his squad went 3-0 in the tournament and improved to 6-5. “It was surreal, the guys made big plays and played with a lot of composure.”

Edwards was named the most outstanding player in the tournament while Sorrell was also named to the all-tournament team.

Middletown also defeated Westwood Christian and Palm Beach Central.

“This trip could not have been any better for the group,” Andrews said. “They had a blast spending time around each other and just strung things together on the court.”

The Middies also had a strong fan base at the tournament with parents and supporters, including former Middie and NFL standout Chris Carter.

“That was a pretty neat experience,” Andrews said. “We had great support, we accomplished every goal and we saw great competition.”

The Middies weren’t the only team to leave the Sunshine State with hardware. Fenwick won the Holiday Hoopla championship in Vero Beach with a 62-53 win over St. Albans (Washington, D.C.) in the title game. Frank Catrine, who led the Falcons with 15 points, was named the tourney’s most outstanding player. Teammate Taylor Umberger also was named to the all-tourney team.

Fenwick also defeated Vero Beach and Southwest (Miami, Fla.).

“It was great preparation for later in the year,” Fenwick coach Pate Kreke said. “We saw three different conflicting styles. It was a great experience. We knew it would be a challenge playing three teams with no preparation time, but it was good for us because it gave us time to work on some things we need to work on.”

The Falcons (7-1) return to Greater Catholic League action Friday when they host Roger Bacon (9-1). Middletown jumps back into Greater Miami Conference play Friday night at Hamilton (4-5).

Andrews is hoping the newfound confidence carries over for the final push in the GMC.

“There is no looking back,” Andrews said. “We didn’t panic and we played emotionally-balanced basketball and I hope passing those tests will help us grind out wins in GMC play the rest of the season.”
