Fenwick girls no match for CJ

By Dave Long

DAYTON —

Fenwick will have to wait another year to get its first Girls Greater Cincinnati League over Chaminade Julienne.

CJ broke a five-game losing streak with a 58-29 home win Wednesday night. The Eagles now own a 10-9 girls high school basketball record, 5-4 in the North Division of the GGCL

Fenwick is 10-10, 2-7 in league play.

In the seven years since both teams entered the GGCL, CJ is 14-0 vs. the Falcons.

The difference Wednesday night came down to freshmen vs. seniors.

Fenwick coach Donn Burrows is using a rotation of five freshmen, two sophomores and a senior.

By contrast, CJ coach Mandy Myers has five seniors and three juniors among the 10 players who see the floor.

“Our girls were just more physically mature, stronger and quicker,” said Myers. “The Fenwick kids did a nice job fundamentally. But you could tell the difference between freshmen and seniors.

“I think they’re going to be good in the future when they get bigger and stronger. But tonight we were able to get a win we really needed.”

CJ has some deficiencies on offense, especially outside shooting. But an aggressive, smothering defense can make up for 24 percent shooting from the floor.

Such was the case Wednesday as CJ forced Fenwick unofficially into 33 turnovers. Those turnovers turned into 28 of 32 first-half points for the Eagles and a 32-17 intermission lead.

When Fenwick did hang on to the ball, CJ was quick enough to get in position to contest every shot.

CJ led 21-17 with 4:20 to go in the second quarter. Then Myers turned up the defensive pressure and Fenwick was outscored 26-2 over a span of 15:11 in the second, third and fourth quarters.

“They’re so quick and so aggressive and we had no answer for it,” said Burrows. “The good thing is we have everybody back next year and they graduate everyone.”

CJ had 10 players in the scoring column led by 12 from Krista White and 11 from Brittaney Jefferson.

Mickey McLanahan, a 5-11 freshman, had a double-double for Fenwick with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
