MIDDLETOWN —
Fenwick High School Athletic Director Mike Asbeck is leaving after three years at the school to fill the same position at Moeller High School.
“It was a difficult decision because Fenwick has been great,” Asbeck said. “This is a great community, and it’s been a great experience. It was just the timing of the opportunity. Moeller obviously speaks for itself as far as tradition athletically, and when the opportunity presented itself I decided to make the move.”
Asbeck will finish the school year at Fenwick before officially taking over at Moeller on July 1. He will become the sixth AD in the history of the Crusaders’ storied athletic program, following in the footsteps of Gerry Faust, Mike Cameron, Jeff Liebert, Jim Lippincott and Barry Borman, who recently announced his retirement after 21 seasons.
Asbeck came to Fenwick in 2010 after six seasons as athletic director at Columbus DeSales, another Catholic high school which also is his alma mater.
“His experience as an athletic director in Catholic schools and understanding of the (Greater Caholic League) was a really big factor in our decision,” Moeller Principal Blane Collison said. “He knows the limitations we have, and he understands the culture of how we operate, not just with financial resources, but based on expectations from the archdiocese.”
During Asbeck’s time at Fenwick, the athletic program experienced numerous league, sectional and district titles, along with a pair of state championships in girls volleyball (2010) and girls soccer (2012).
“We’ve been able to accomplish a lot,” Asbeck said. “We’ve had a lot of success. We’ve had two state championships, but it’s not just our athletic success, but our academic success with our student athletes been extremely high.
“Our boosters have been extremely successful in fund raising to provide for out student athletes,” he continued. “And just the camaraderie we’ve been able to build, not only here with the relationships we’ve been able to build with our community outside of the school.”
Asbeck and his wife Gretchen have two sons, Jacob, 7, and Max, 5, and he said his family is thankful for the time they spent at Fenwick.
“It’s a great community that I’m leaving, but I feel like I’m going to another great community,” he said. “It’s been a good run. It’s been a nice three years.”
