CENTERVILLE —
As the finalists lined up for the Parade of Champions prior to the Centerville 1 Division I sectional finals Saturday night, Centerville 182-pounder Garrett Conner couldn’t believe what he saw.
“It looked like we were lining up for a dual meet,” Conner said after the Elks placed 10 in the championship finals in running away with the team title by almost 70 points. “This is a special team this year. We had a lot of guys put in the effort to get better.”
Conner was joined as sectional champ by teammates Troy Barklay (113), Josh Scanlon (132), Alexander Bair (152), Adam Tonkin (195) and Conan Jennings (220) in scoring 250.5 points.
“Usually, you have a team that has some studs and duds,” Conner said. “But it was hard to crack our lineup this year and that made our team better.”
Beavercreek held on for second over Lakota West with 182.5 points.
Lakota East claimed the other Centerville sectional title with 200.5 points. Fairmont was second with 182 while Miamisburg was third with 171.5.
In a showdown between returning state qualifiers, Miamisburg’s Jordan Branham used a third-period takedown to claim a 3-2 win over returning state placer Mason Calvert of Sidney. Calvert had defeated Branham in the Greater Western Ohio Conference finals after the Viking senior had won the first meeting in the finals of the Holiday tournament.
“After league, I changed up my game plan,” Branham said. “I had to weather his storm early and pick it up toward the end. I can’t be happy with this, I have to keep working and progressing.”
Franklin claims Tipp City title: It had been eight years since the Franklin wrestling team claimed a sectional championship — until Saturday night.
Franklin got five championships in scoring 221.5 points to overwhelm second-place Carroll by 63.5 points.
“It felt good to get one of those (sectional titles),” Franklin coach Jon Berry said. “You could tell we need to get our conditioning back a little, but it was great having everyone back and excited to wrestle.”
Chase Henderson had the big win for the Wildcats. The senior 285-pounder handled undefeated Beau Harmon of Ben Logan 3-1 in overtime for the title.
Franklin also got titles from Forrest Brewer (113), Jacob Wright (152), Alex Nori (160), and Michael Crockett (195) in advancing 10 to the district tournament.
Graham rolled at Milton, qualifying 13 and getting seven titles in scoring 294.5 points to beat second-place Indian Lake by 103.5.
Payton Ott claimed a title for Eaton at 126 with Graham’s Eli Seipel handing defending state champ Cameron Kelly of Bellbrook a 7-2 defeat at 113.
Crusaders claim first sectional: It was an historical night for Dayton Christian at Carlisle.
The Crusaders claimed their first sectional title with 224 points and advanced a school-record 11 to the Division III district.
“Everyone wrestled well,” Dayton Christian coach Ted Bray said. “We had a few surprises and I think it lined us up to have a good shot at winning the district title next week.”
Dayton Christian got titles from Hunter Bray (106), Christian Clary (113) and Jacob Danishek (145).
Carlisle and Dixie tied for second with 184.5 points.
Covington claimed the Lehman Catholic title with 228.5 points. Defending champ Versailles was second with 183, one point ahead of Mechanicsburg.
