Dayton women again top Cincy, Columbus golf teams

By Bucky Albers

Contributing writer

It wasn’t very long ago that the Dayton District Women’s Golf Association team had gone 22 years without winning the annual Tri-City Matches with teams from Cincinnati and Columbus.

Now the Dayton women have won three of the last four.

The most recent victory came Tuesday on the North Course at NCR Country Club, where the 15-member team from the Gem City scored 295.5 points to outpace Cincinnati (285) and Columbus (229.5).

The Dayton group, assembled by captain Kathy Ingersoll, included: Laura Murray, Lynn Grunkemeyer, Kathleen Glavin, Madison Musick, Penny Bitzer, Winnie Cleavenger, Becky Owen, Daryl Nels, Grace Nickolai, Cathy Jefferson, Alee Everman, Peg Wynkoop, Becky Krakowski, Amanda Dixon and Tee Pazitney.

Each played in a threesome with one member each of the two opposing teams, having a separate competition against each foe. One point per hole was awarded. The pairings were made by handicaps, lowest against the lowest and highest against highest.

Laura Murray, who had Dayton’s lowest handicap, had to compete against the best player from Cincinnati and Columbus. Ingersoll said the recent Tippecanoe High School graduate did a great job in wrestling 6.5 points from Cincinnati’s Marissa Steen, a Memphis State University senior with a plus-2.7 handicap.

Alee Everman of Centerville, a late addition to the Dayton team, won 25.5 of a possible 36 points from her two foes.

Ingersoll, the current DDWGA president, pointed out that three of the players — Murray, Musick and Everman — were the recipients of DDWGA scholarship awards this year. Murray will attend the University of Akron, Musick will be a freshman at Ashland University and Everman will be a sophomore at Robert Morris University.

Kittyhawk to host City Stroke Play

Christopher Sloan will defend his City Men’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship this week at Kittyhawk Golf Center.

Sloan, a 20-year-old Centerville High School graduate, won the 2010 event at Community Golf Course by nine strokes when he finished the 72-hole test with a 2-over-par score of 286.

Sloan finished 12th in last week’s Miami Valley Metropolitan Championship at Sycamore Creek Country Club.

The entries for the City are not all in (the deadline is 6 p.m. Monday), but another who has entered is former Wright State University golfer Junichi Hayashi, who was in contention last year when 34 players entered. Hayashi tied for 21st in the recent Metro.

The open division will alternate between the Hawk and Eagle courses, beginning on Thursday. The senior competition for golfers 50 and older is 36 holes and begins on Saturday.

Weckerling finishes 5th in Optimist Tourney

Oakwood High School graduate Corey Weckerling finished fifth in the Boys 16-18 Division of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Weckerling posted rounds of 70, 76, 69 and 70 for a 3-under-par total of 285, just four strokes behind the winner.

Steven Sveda of Centerville and Ben Thieman of Sidney both missed the cut.

In the Boys 14-15 Division, Tripp French tied for 38th with a 54-hole score of 232, and Luke Schumann tied for 82nd with a 248 total.

Chip shots

• Tim Walton, teaching pro at Rollandia Golf Center, missed the cut in the recent U.S. Senior Open at Inverness Golf Club in Toledo.

While turning in a 36-hole score of 158 with rounds of 78 and 80, Walton made three birdies, 16 pars, 15 bogeys and two double bogeys. He hit 14 of 30 fairways and 12 of 36 greens in regulation.

• Greg Ingersoll, who has had two previous terms as manager at Miami Valley Golf Club, took over that position for the third time on Monday.

• Beavercreek Golf Club will hold its club championship next weekend (Aug. 13-14) with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. There will be four flights — championship, first flight, seniors (55 and over) and ladies. The last three will be handicapped, with both gross and net winners. Call the pro shop (937-320-0742) for more details.
