Four locals rebound to place third at state

COLUMBUS —

Aside from winning a championship, one of the toughest things to do at the state wrestling tournament is to come back from a crushing loss and make a run through the consolation bracket to finish third.

Saturday at the Schottenstein Center, all four remaining area wrestlers did exactly that.

The Carlisle trio of senior Marcus Smith (195), junior Jimmy Sandlin (160) and sophomore Jason Sandlin (132) and Franklin junior Chase Henderson (285) all rebounded from Friday disappointments to place third.

“It means a lot,” said Henderson, who won his Division II third-place match in double overtime, riding Beloit West Branch senior Connor Sharp for 30 seconds to score a 2-1 victory. Henderson also rode Sharp for 30 seconds for an ultimate-tiebreaker victory in Friday morning’s quarterfinals.

“My goal was to be top four,” Henderson added. “If I set a goal, I’m going to achieve it no matter what it takes. It means a lot to continue on the path. It’s been a lot of work, and a lot of reward finally.”

Henderson finished the season 44-6 and is the highest-placing heavyweight from Franklin since Jeremy Deaton took second in 1998.

The two wins Saturday morning helped ease some of the sting after dropping an 8-3 decision to Whitehall-Yearling senior Alex Farrow in Friday night’s semifinals.

Smith and Jason Sandlin also fell one win short of the championship finals, with Sandlin’s being especially devastating when he lost a 2-1 lead with two seconds to go against undefeated Edgerton senior Jared VanVleet.

“I just had to stop thinking about it,” Sandlin said. “It wasn’t easy.”

Sandlin won his third-place match against Massillon Tuslaw senior Dylan Marthey by a 3-1 count.

“That shows something about his character,” Carlisle assistant coach Jake Follick. “That’s one of the hardest things to do, especially how quick this tournament is, to have to come back in the morning and wrestle two matches within an hour of each other against state-caliber wrestlers.”

Sandlin (34-4) took the same path last year, losing in the semifinals before coming back to place third at 126.

Older brother Jimmy Sandlin’s lone loss came in the Friday morning semifinals, but he rebounded to win two matches later in the day and two more Saturday morning, capping his 44-4 season with a 2-1 decision against Mechanicsburg senior Max Erwin.

“(The loss) was really tough on me,” Jimmy said after earning a spot on the podium for the first time in three tips to state. “Everybody up here wants to win the state title, but it shows your toughness when you lose and how you come back the rest of the tournament.”

When asked how he and Jason would settle bragging rights after both finished third, Jimmy said, “I guess we’ll have to go back to training in the room to see who’s better.”

Smith ended his prep career with a 6-2 victory against Loudonville junior Ryan Weber in the third-place bout. Smith finished his senior year with a record of 41-7 and helped Carlisle set a school record with three placers.

The Indians had a pair of placers in 2010 and 2006, when Tyler Savage won the school’s only state title.
