Whitworth to teammates, coaches: Shut up and win

CINCINNATI —

If there is anything Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth is more sick of than the team’s four-game losing streak, it’s the excuses and finger-pointing from teammates and coaches trying to explain it.

“I think we are searching for reasons rather than just winning football games,” Whitworth said. “We don’t need to point fingers. We need to make plays when we need to make them and win the football game.”

Coach Marvin Lewis last week said quarterback Andy Dalton and middle linebacker Rey Maualuga need to be better leaders and bigger jerks. And offensive coordinator Jay Gruden echoed that sentiment, saying “We need somebody to take this team by the throat and make some things happen,” while also calling for more production from the receivers opposite A.J. Green.

Some players have cited the lack of a running game, while others have pointed toward various other issues.

Whitworth is tired of all of it.

“Stop worrying about whose fault it is and stop worrying about pointing the finger one place or the other and start worrying about the next play,” Whitworth said. “I’ve heard Marvin, I’ve heard Jay, I’ve heard all these people trying to point to people that need to do things. We just need to go win a football game and stop worrying about who we are trying to say needs to do something.”

Helpful hints: The Bengals signed center Scott Wedige to the practice squad Tuesday. Wedige spent nine days with the New York Giants earlier this season, and while he admitted it was a brief stint, he still thinks he has something to offer his new teammates.

“I definitely have a little insight, and hopefully I can give them a few pointers here and there,” said Wedige, an undrafted rookie from Northern Illinois. “I was only out there for a little while, but I can definitely give them some tips on their personnel and some of their favorite moves because I went up against the D-line a lot. I know they’re extremely talented, but hopefully we’ll get the best of them this weekend.”

Giant zero: With an all-time road record of 0-5 against the Bengals, the Giants are one of three current NFL teams that has never won a game in Cincinnati. The others are Philadelphia (0-3-1) and Carolina (0-1).

Also, Cincinnati is one of five NFL cities in which Eli Manning has yet to throw a touchdown pass. The others are Baltimore, Denver, Miami and Buffalo. Manning was 19 of 37 for 201 yards with one interception in his only trip to Paul Brown Stadium, a 23-22 loss during his rookie season in 2004.

Bengal boost: Denver kick returner Trindon Holliday was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown Sunday against the Bengals.

It’s the third time this year an opponent has won Player of the Week accolades against the Bengals. Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco earned offensive honors in Week 1, and Miami defensive tackle Randy Starks did it in Week 5.
