OXFORD —

Zac Dysert has made history this season, and he has yet to throw an official pass.

The Miami University redshirt senior quarterback has been named a captain for the RedHawks football team, becoming the first player in the 124-year history of the program to earn that distinction three times.

“I didn’t know I was first until they told me,” Dysert said. “It’s an awesome feeling. It’s just a great honor that my teammates and coaches feel that strongly about me. It’s a privilege to lead the team like this.”

The team selected three other captains as well: linebacker Jaytee Swanson, defensive tackle Austin Brown and wide receiver Andy Cruse. Brown was also a captain in 2010.

“This group has been together for a long time,” MU coach Don Treadwell said. “All of those players who were nominated as captains are seniors, and that’s not always the case. That’s a strong testament to our senior leadership. There’s a lot of responsibility in being a captain, and we believe these young men will do a good job in representing the overall team.”

Of Dysert’s three-time honor, Treadwell added, “That’s special. It speaks very significantly to how the team feels about Zac.”

Dysert said he takes being a captain seriously.

“Nothing’s really changed because the last three years have been the same for me,” he said. “I’ve got to be a leader on and off the field. I’ve got to show the young guys the right way to do things, how to be a Miami man.”
