D-II boys sectional logjam speaks of loaded field

By Eric Frantz

How competitive is the upcoming Division II boys basketball sectional at Trent Arena? One point separated the second, third and fourth seeds at Sunday’s tournament draw inside Fairmont High School.

“It’s a gauntlet,” Thurgood Marshall head coach Darnell Hoskins said, after his Cougars were tabbed the top seed. “It was the same way last year. There are going to be some early games that draw a lot of attention.”

The attention Sunday was on Dunbar and Franklin, which tied for the second seed after online voting by coaches. A tiebreaker was conducted. Dunbar won.

Alter, which earned the fourth seed, was one-point shy of forcing its way into the re-vote as well.

Marshall, Dunbar, Franklin and Alter are all ranked in the Associated Press state poll.

“There’s nowhere to run and there’s nowhere to hide,” Bellbrook head coach Perry Caldwell said of the loaded 14-team field. “Where do you go?”

Dunbar and Franklin both went away from Marshall. The Wolverines open tournament play against Ponitz, while Franklin faces the winner of Carroll and Monroe. Marshall opens with Oakwood. The Bellbrook-Meadowdale winner awaits before a potential meeting with Alter. The sectional finals are Feb. 28 at UD Arena.

“It’s amazing to me that we don’t have an open draw, but it also says a lot about the depth in this district,” Hoskins said. “It will make for a very, very interesting sectional. Should be exciting again.”

Since D-II doesn’t have an open draw, fellow state top 10 team Trotwood-Madison easily earned the top seed in the Springfield sectional. The Rams open with Ben Logan. Shawnee, the No. 2 seed, drew Indian Lake in its opener.

Division I: Wayne was the top seed in the Dayton sectional, followed by Springboro, Northmont and Beavercreek. The Warriors open tournament play against Sidney, while ‘Boro faces Edgewood. In a slight surprise, Northmont elected to go into the same bracket as Springboro. The T-Bolts open with Troy. Springfield, the No. 7 seed, opens with Centerville.

Walnut Hills and Moeller were the top two seeds in Cincinnati. Middletown faces Kings in its opener, while Hamilton drew Princeton. Lakota West, the six seed, plays the winner of Loveland-Sycamore. Five seed Lakota East opens with Glen Este.

D-I games will be held at Lakota West, Hamilton, Oak Hills, Fairfield, Centerville and Butler.

Division III: Fenwick, which beat Alter on Friday, capped a big weekend by earning the top seed in the Dayton sectional. The Falcons open tournament play against Madison. Versailles, Greeneview and Stivers rounded out the top four spots. Versailles and Greeneview both elected the same bracket and a potential district final meeting with Fenwick (as opposed to Summit Country Day, the top seed in Cincinnati and Ohio’s No. 1 team).

D-III games will be held at Western Brown, Tippecanoe, Loveland, Bellbrook, Monroe and Tecumseh.

Division IV: Unbeaten Tri-Village was the No. 1 seed in Dayton, while Troy Christian was seeded second. Franklin-Monroe, the No. 3 seed, opted to go into the same bracket as T-V.

D-V games will be held at Oak Hills, Piqua and Troy.

Brackets: All of bracket are available at swdab.org. Tournament play begins Feb. 22.
