Wright State tennis coach Sean McCaffrey’s milestone victory passed without notice on the court Wednesday. His players didn’t know about it. He didn’t want a big deal made out of it.

“It’s about them,” McCaffrey said. “The only thing we talked about is in the last 36 matches at home, we’ve won 34. We’ve won 26 or 27 in a row. Very few programs out there can say they have a record like that.”

McCaffrey’s 100th victory as Wright State coach was also the 200th victory of his career. He’s 61-48 with the Wright State men’s team and 39-62 with the women in five seasons. He also had 100 victories in his previous head coaching job at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire.

McCaffrey is more concerned with the records of his current teams than his personal accomplishments. The men’s team is 6-5 after a 5-2 victory over Northern Kentucky on Wednesday. Four of its losses are to nationally-ranked teams.

“I think the guys are passionate,” McCaffrey said. “They’re eager. They’re also cohesive. They’re very tight. If one guy’s tired, his teammates will encourage him in a positive way and pick him up. I’ve never really coached a team like this, especially in a sport that’s so individual. You’re out there alone. We’ve tried to make it more like basketball, more like baseball, where you have that team environment.”

Lauri Makikalli, of Finland, and Hayden Joblin, of New Zealand, have each taken turns at the No. 1 singles spots. Makikalli is 4-5. Joblin is 2-0.

McCaffrey’s women’s team is 3-4. It beat Chicago State 7-0 on Friday, but then lost 6-1 to Akron and 7-0 to IPFW. Miamisburg’s Kayla Tuscany is 4-3 at No. 1 singles.

Baseball: The Raiders are off to a 3-0 start. They beat Temple 8-3 and La Salle 9-5 at the Ron Fraser Classic in Cary, N.C., last week, but their other two games there were cancelled because of bad weather.

To make up for the lost games, Wright State scheduled Dayton on Monday and beat the Flyers 5-1 in the first game on the new turf at Nischwitz Stadium.

Mark Fowler is leading the offense with a .714 average (5-for-7). Sam Picchiotti has driven in six runs and has two doubles and a home run.

Casey Henn, a senior right-hander making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery, threw six scoreless innings in the opener against Temple.

Wright State begins a three-game series at Clemson today. It hosts Xavier on Tuesday and then flies across country for three games at UCLA March 1-3.

Softball: The Raiders went 0-5 at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Los Angeles. Three of the losses were to two top-25 teams.

Wright State was outscored by a combined score of 20-0 in two games against No. 19 UCLA and one against No. 17 Texas A&M.

The Raiders play in the Blues City Classic today and Saturday in Southhaven, Miss, with two games today against Wichita State and Indiana State and two Saturday against SIU-Edwardsville and Samford.
