Miami hopes to end losing season on winning note

By Rick Cassano

OXFORD —

Another losing season has been assured, and Miami University football coach Don Treadwell admitted he didn’t expect it.

“You never sit and expect that,” Treadwell said Monday during his weekly press conference. “You kind of deal the hand that you’re played, and you just keep coaching and our kids keep working.

“What are you going to do? You wake up every day and give it the best that you can and hope that everybody’s moving in that same direction, and then you continue to assess where you’re at and what tweaks may need to be done.”

The RedHawks are 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference East Division heading into Friday’s season finale against visiting Ball State (8-3, 5-2 MAC West).

A loss would give MU the same overall and conference records it had last year in Treadwell’s first season.

Miami is coming off a 30-16 defeat at Central Michigan and has lost five of its last six games.

“We played well at times,” Treadwell said of last Saturday’s contest. “Central made more plays that produced points. It hasn’t been a lot of times that we had 80 plays within a game. So at the end of the day, if you’re being effective, then certainly you need to have more points to show for that.”

Quarterback Zac Dysert continued to perform at a high level with 343 passing yards, but was victimized by several drops, two in the end zone.

“There’s no telling what type of day he could’ve had,” Treadwell said.

Dysert, a redshirt senior, is 276 of 440 for 3,265 yards and 23 touchdowns with 12 interceptions in 2012. He’s already Miami’s all-time leader in passing yards (11,795) and ranks 22nd in Football Bowl Subdivision history.

“What makes his accomplishments extra special is that he’s had to overcome three offensive philosophies,” Treadwell said. “It’s not like he’s been here in this system for four or five years and by now you should be playing like that. He’s been able to adapt, pick up, change his thought processes from what he did under the prior staff. He did that when the prior staff before (Mike) Haywood took over.

“That very seldom happens in college. I think it only helps (his professional prospects) because that’s typically what the scouts want to know. Have you had success in multipe scenarios?”

The MU coach said an effort will be made to get all of his seniors in Friday’s game. The school list includes 25 seniors about to play in their final contest, and that doesn’t include Austin Brown.

Brown, a captain and defensive tackle, hasn’t played since Week 2 because of a back injury. Treadwell said he’ll likely apply for a medical redshirt.

“That would be an area that we will definitely explore,” Treadwell said.

He said among the surprises this season has been the collective tight-end play led by Steve Marck (22 catches, 267 yards), Dustin White (11 catches, 85 yards) and Orlando David (seven catches, 49 yards).

“A year ago, we didn’t have them quite as involved in the pass game,” Treadwell said. “This year, they’ve been a little bit more able to help us consistently. That was an early surprise that has kind of been maintained throughout the year.”

Ball State QB out: BSU coach Pete Lembo confirmed Monday that quarterback Keith Wenning will miss the Miami game because of an ankle injury.

Wenning, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior from Coldwater, has completed 279 of 426 passes for 2,878 yards and 22 touchdowns. Lembo said he expects Wenning to be ready for any postseason play.

Redshirt senior Kelly Page (6-3, 214) is the new starting quarterback for the Cardinals. He saw his first action of the season in relief of Wenning last Wednesday against Ohio, hitting 5 of 7 throws for 41 yards and two TDs.

MAC honor roll: The conference announced its Players of the Week on Monday.

In the East Division, Kent State slotback Dri Archer (offense), Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack (defense) and KSU punter Anthony Melchiori (special teams) were the honorees. West Division awards went to Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch (offense), Central Michigan defensive back Jahleel Addae (defense) and Eastern Michigan place-kicker Dylan Mulder (special teams).
