OXFORD —
History is staring Zac Dysert in the face. Maybe he’ll celebrate in 10 years.
Right now, the redshirt senior quarterback is focused on the Miami University football team’s quest for a Mid-American Conference title and a bowl game, not on his bid to become the school’s all-time leading passer.
Barring an injury today at Buffalo, Dysert will pass Ben Roethlisberger and become No. 1 in career passing yards. He has 10,755 in four seasons — Roethlisberger had 10,829 in three years.
“I think it’s something that’ll mean something more to me a little bit farther down the road,” Dysert said earlier this week. “Right now, I just want to put the team first and do whatever I need to do to make the team successful.”
The Ada native said he wasn’t aware of the fact that he trailed Roethlisberger by just 74 yards.
“I did not know that until you just told me,” Dysert said to a reporter. “Thank you.”
He has completed 188-of-303 passes for 2,225 yards and 15 touchdowns with nine interceptions this season. His 278.1 passing yards per game rank 18th in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
MU quarterbacks coach Mike Bath said Dysert has lived up to his expectations in 2012.
“I believe that Zac has gotten better every week,” Bath said. “There’s been some weeks where just the outcome of the game probably dictated him pressing at times, but I’m excited about where we’re at and where we’re going.”
Dysert certainly hasn’t been perfect. He’s hit more than a few rough patches this year. Last Saturday, he tried to force a pass into the end zone just before halftime and got picked off by Ohio’s Nathan Carpenter.
“I was trying to make something happen,” Dysert said. “I definitely just needed to take a step back there, take a deep breath. But that’s all right. I learned from it. We won, so that’s all that matters.
“Sometimes I get a little tense in the pocket, maybe try to escape the pocket a little bit too quick. Sometimes I might take my eyes off the safety a little bit too quick. Other times it could be decision making, game management, things like that. For me, it’s just becoming a better football player, a student of the game.”
Bath said he’s never heard Dysert bring up Roethlisberger’s record.
“I don’t think it matters to him,” Bath said. “I think he understands that, yeah, it’s kind of a big deal. But he just wants to win. I think it’s refreshingly neat that he doesn’t care about the statistics. He wants to go out a winner as a senior.”
Bath is fourth on Miami’s all-time list with 6,524 yards. He passed Sam Ricketts (5,870) to become the No. 1 passer in 2000, but was ultimately eclipsed by Roethlisberger, Dysert and Josh Betts (7,029).
Bath was asked if the chase to become the all-time leader was a big deal to him at the time.
“It really wasn’t,” he said. “I think it’s very similar to Zac because Zac has a relationship with Ben. For me, it was Sam Ricketts, and Sam and I were great friends. He was my mentor in college. I think it’ll mean a lot to Zac from the symbolic stance that he passed a guy that he really looks up to.”
