RedHawks dismiss freshman guard, add 7-footer

OXFORD —

The Miami University men’s basketball roster is evolving.

Freshman guard Roderick Lawrence was dismissed from the team last week, while 7-foot, 260-pound John Hawkins has been added as a walk-on and will be eligible for the 2013-14 season.

Lawrence was one of three recruits brought in by new coach John Cooper, who said the dismissal was based on detrimental conduct. “These decisions are never easy, but there are standards for a Miami University men’s basketball player to which our young men must adhere.”

That statement was released last Friday. On Tuesday, Cooper said he will make no further comments regarding Lawrence.

“I have issued a statement. There it is,” he said. “I’m done. No more.”

Cooper said it’s unlikely Miami will fill that scholarship this season. The RedHawks only have one senior (Vince Legarza) on this year’s roster.

“We now have two scholarships for next season,” Cooper said. “We’ve got to make sure we can get two quality people in the program.”

Hawkins played in 10 games as a freshman last season at Palm Beach Atlantic University, a Division II school in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The Troy, Mich., native averaged 4.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 11.5 minutes per game. Hawkins was at MU for the first day of school and thus did not replace Lawrence on the roster.

“We got a call about him,” Cooper said. “He’s coming back this way, and would we be interested? He’s the biggest walk-on I’ve ever had. He has some things from a coaching perspective that you can’t teach. I can’t teach 7 feet.”

Hawkins will be able to practice with the team while he sits out this season under NCAA transfer rules.

“Most importantly, he’s a great kid,” Cooper said. “He’s got really soft hands. We’re going to work on his body and his agility and see what he becomes. It’s going to be a process for him, but his attitude has been incredible.”

The RedHawks will begin practice Oct. 12. Their only exhibition game will be at home Oct. 31 against Maryville (Mo.).

Redshirt junior guard Allen Roberts of Middletown was scheduled to go on trial this month to face a misdemeanor assault charge, but Cooper said that charge has been dropped.

Asked if Roberts was in good standing with the basketball program, Cooper replied like this:

“At this point, he’s got some things that he has to prove to me. He has to show me that we can count on him. He has to show me that he values being here and that he values the opportunity. As we go through that and he shows me those things, then I’ll address it at that point.”
