Penguins dominate second half, thump Miami women 76-56

By Rick Cassano

OXFORD —

Losing is one thing. Getting outworked is another, especially to Miami University women’s basketball coach Maria Fantanarosa.

Unbeaten Youngstown State shot 63.6 percent from the floor after intermission and sprinted away from a 25-all halftime deadlock en route to a 76-56 victory Sunday at Millett Hall.

“I’m very frustrated right now,” Fantanarosa said. “I’ve been patient with this team because I know we’ve got kids in that locker room that want to win, but they’re not doing it on both ends of the court.

“I’ve got some that are playing well on offense, some that are playing well on defense, and we’re not a football team. They, especially my upperclassmen, need to put both ends of the court together.”

Courtney Osborn scored 15 points and was the lone player in double digits for the RedHawks (3-2), who shot 37.7 percent from the field, committed 18 turnovers and got outrebounded 40-27.

MU led just once in the second half (28-26), then watched the Penguins take control with a 12-2 spurt.

“We have a target on our backs,” said Osborn, who was 5-of-15 from the floor and had 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. “They were celebrating after that game, and that hurts a little bit. We’ve got to come with a chip on our shoulder to practice.”

Kirsten Olowinski tallied 9 points, 5 boards and 3 steals for Miami. Kelsey Simon and Jessica Rupright added 8 points apiece.

“You have some of those games where things aren’t clicking and you’re adjusting and it seems like they’re still falling apart, but we have plenty of people on our team that can play,” Olowinski said. “You have to look to other people, including yourselves, to step up and find ways to make things happen.”

The RedHawks rallied from a 17-8 deficit to take a 20-19 lead in the first half. Simon’s two free throws in the closing seconds made it 25-25.

In the second half, Fantanarosa felt her players were mostly spectators on the defensive end.

“We stood and watched,” the MU coach said. “Everything we did in the first half with early helpside, we didn’t get there in the second half. Then where they outworked us was our rotation was slow.”

Brandi Brown was an inside force for YSU (4-0), collecting 18 points and 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Liz Hornberger (18 on 6-of-8 treys), Heidi Schlegel (12), Shar’Rae Davis (12) and Karen Flagg (10).

Penguins coach Bob Boldon said his squad made adjustments and did a much better job against Miami’s switching man-to-man defense after the break.

“We haven’t played against a switch all year, so I thought it was a very intelligent move on their part,” Boldon said. “In the second half, we adjusted our cuts and our movements accordingly. This was probably the most complete game that we’ve played.”

Said Osborn, “We were playing great team defense. Then in the second half, we got a little selfish on the defensive end. They were shooting layups.”

Osborn was 4-of-9 beyond the arc. Her teammates tried eight 3-pointers and made none.

“Our post players are finishing, but our guards are not holding up their end,” Fantanarosa said. “Besides Osborn, we didn’t have anybody that actually wanted to shoot. We were very hesitant with our guard play in the second half.”

Miami visits Kentucky on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
