Late traveling call irks Miami’s Rollins

By Rick Cassano

TOLEDO —

Miami University guard Quinten Rollins turned the ball over in the final seconds Wednesday night. At least that was the official ruling.

Rollins had a different viewpoint after getting called for a travel with 1.4 seconds left, then watching Toledo’s Nathan Boothe hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to sink the RedHawks men’s basketball team 65-64 at Savage Arena.

“I can’t make the call, unfortunately,” Rollins said. “I’ve just got to take it in stride and forget about it and move on.”

Here’s what happened: The Rockets’ Matt Smith threw the ball in-bounds in front of the UT bench with 2.8 seconds left and hit the backboard with a poor pass. Rollins and Boothe briefly had their hands on the ball after it left the glass, and Rollins fell backward with it. Traveling.

“I looked at the ref and said, ‘I never had control of it,’ ” Rollins said. “It either should’ve been a tie-up or he should’ve let it go because I didn’t gain control of the ball until he actually blew the whistle and I was on the ground.”

Boothe felt it was the correct call.

“I thought he was going to call a jump ball because at first I thought we both had it,” the 6-foot-9 freshman center said. “I let go and he landed on his back, and luckily the ref called a travel.”

MU coach John Cooper said Boothe’s game-winning trey looked dead-on. The play was reviewed to make sure he was behind the line, and he was.

“It never crossed my mind that we were getting ready to win until we defended the last possession,” Cooper said. “That’s just how it is when you’re sitting over on our side. The big kid just made a big shot.”

Almost a hero: Freshman Reggie Johnson gave Miami a 64-62 lead with 3.3 seconds remaining. Allen Roberts drove to the basket and misfired, and Johnson was right there for the offensive board and putback.

“I just ran right up Allen’s back and was just trying to crash because I knew that was going to be the end of it,” Johnson said. “It just fell right in my hands. It was a lucky play, really. It could’ve bounced anywhere else.”

Said Cooper, “We always talk about when the shot goes up late in the game, people tend to watch, and that’s happened. Reggie had an open lane to it.”

Johnson was 6 of 11 from the floor and 2 of 5 from 3-point range.

“It’s still an ‘L’ in the column,” Johnson said. “But we’re getting better.”

Notebook: Toledo shot 51.1 percent from the field and 76.9 percent from the foul line. … Will Felder grabbed seven rebounds for Miami, and Geovonie McKnight and Will Sullivan added five apiece. Rollins dished out six assists. … The RedHawks overcame a 49-39 deficit in the last 13 minutes and went up 62-58 on Roberts’ 3-pointer with 3:41left.
