Bengals’ Still addresses situation at Penn State

CINCINNATI —

Bengals rookie defensive tackle Devon Still, the lone Penn State product on the roster, knew the questions were coming, and he was ready.

“We went through half our season at Penn State (where) I was the person who was the spokesperson,” Still said, referring to the turbulent time when news of criminal case against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky broke in November. “Most of the times I was the only person with the media, so I understand what questions to expect and how to answer them.”

Still fielded numerous questions during a six-minute interview. Among the topics were:

If Still had a son, would he let him go to Penn State?

“I would send him there because I know the values they teach you. I didn’t got there the most mature young man, but it definitely helped me grow into the man I am today.”

On the removal of the Joe Paterno statue:

“It was heartbreaking, but I understand the reason.”

The Freeh Report:

“It’s stuff I had heard before, but just hearing it in detail it was kind of surprising. Hopefully more information comes out so you can better get an idea of what was happening there.”

The NCAA penalties:

“I thought it was pretty strict. I felt as though the football team didn’t really have anything to do with what went on. I felt it was more of a civil matter, not an NCAA matter. But you just have to take that on the chin and continue to move on.”

Tweet delete: Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis addressed the team’s Twitter ban following Friday’s practice, saying it wasn’t a unilateral decision on his part.

“The guys who are the leaders of this football team see no need for it,” Lewis said. “So they handled it, and it’s done with.”

Lewis expressed his anger on Wednesday after first-round draft pick Dre Kirkpatrick sent a Tweet after news broke that he a knee and injury and would miss a significant portion of camp.

“Social media is way beyond me,” Lewis said. “I understand that. But I think people have to have the maturity and the wherewithal to be able to handle it. Thus far what I’ve experienced since April is we don’t have the maturity to handle it.”

Injury report: Wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, defensive end Robert Geathers and offensive guard Travelle Wharton did not finish practice.

“I think Robert twisted his knee a little bit,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. “The other guys were just cramping and heat. The anxiety of it all and everything, it’s funny how it overcomes you. Plus a lot of guys aren’t used to how we work. It’s the first time they’ve been with us in the real deal.”

Five players missed the opening practice with injuries Friday. Kirkpatrick was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list, while cornerback Nate Clements, wide receiver Jordan Shipley, defensive tackle Pat Sims and kicker Mike Nugent were put on the Active/Physically unable to perform list.

All are eligible to return as soon as they are deemed ready.

Linebacker Brandon Joiner, an undrafted rookie free agent who is serving prison time in Texas for two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of felony drug possession, was placed on the reserve/did not report list, which means he does not count against the roster limit. He is ineligible to resume any team activities without first being reinstated by the NFL Commissioner’s office.
