CINCINNATI —
The return to the routine was anything but for a handful of Cincinnati Bengals players who had their bye-week travel plans impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
Wide receiver Mohamed Sanu cut short his visit home, switching to a flight that left four hours earlier than his originally scheduled one Sunday afternoon, while safety Jeromy Miles managed to dodge numerous cancelations and make it on the final flight out of Philadelphia.
But long snapper Clark Harris was not so fortunate. His 6 p.m. flight out of Philadelphia was canceled, forcing him to drive 12 hours in the rain with his wife and crying 4-month-old.
“It wasn’t fun,” he said after arriving in time for Monday morning’s practice. “My flight was at 6, and I just found out that Jeromy Miles flew out at like 10:30 last night, so I’m kind of confused on why mine was canceled. But oh well, it happens.”
Harris was in a surprisingly chipper mood despite the drive and the realization the house he bought last year in Manahawkin, N.J., may not be there the next time he goes home.
“My house is presently in the process of being demolished probably by this hurricane,” he said. “I’m right on the shore. I got water in my backyard and everything.
“There’s nothing you can do about it,” he added. “I’ve got to be back here for practice. I can’t stop a hurricane from coming. So whatever happens, happens. I got flood insurance for a reason.”
Running back Brian Leonard, another New Jersey native, also made it back in time to make his return to practice after re-aggravating a rib injury two weeks ago in Cleveland.
“Feeling good,” Leonard said. “I got out there and did some individual (drills) today. I’ll be back full go Wednesday. The rib feels good. I’ll be out there ready to go.”
Leonard said he rents space in a friend’s house in Morristown, N.J., and that he’s worried about how it will hold up during the storm.
“He already had a tree fall on his fence outside, and he just bought a brand new house,” Leonard said. “The storm hasn’t even really started yet and a tree already fell. He lives in an area where there’s a lot of trees around his house, so hopefully it will be OK.”
Sanu’s scramble to find an earlier flight capped a whirlwind weekend. He had his South Brunswick High School jersey retired Friday night and attended the Rutgers homecoming Saturday afternoon.
“I was all over the place, got to see a lot of people,” said Sanu, who added that he regretted switching to an earlier flight after hearing others made it out later.
“I wish I would have kept the extra four hours to spend time with the family,” he said. “I’ve been texting back and forth with friends and family to see how the weather was. They’re saying it’s not as bad yet, but it’s getting there.”
The players are off today and will resume practice Wednesday in preparation for Sunday’s game against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos at Paul Brown Stadium.
