Notes: Dixon, Young star in Wright State’s victory over Miami

FAIRBORN —

Jerran Young and Miles Dixon probably didn’t know much, if anything, about Wright State a year ago at this time.

Young was playing for McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, and Dixon was playing at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, a little over 2 hours away.

The two committed to the Raiders in the spring, and if Wednesday’s game is any indication, they’re going to be big producers for the team from here on out.

Dixon scored 21 points, and Young had 19 in a 67-59 victory over Miami at the Nutter Center. Those are season highs for both. Young hadn’t scored more than 6 points in a game this season, while Dixon had scored 16 twice. Neither player started.

Young had 6 rebounds and made 4-of-8 field goals and 11-of-14 free throws. He also had 2 assists and 3 steals.

“It’s coming along,” Young said. “We’re getting the hang of different players from different states, trying to get chemistry. We come from here and there, and the team bonding keeps us together.”

Dixon made 11-of-12 free throws and hit 5-of-13 shots from the field.

“It feels good,” Dixon said. “I wouldn’t credit myself individually. If it wasn’t for my teammates, we wouldn’t have won this game. I play hard and try my best. I think I had a good game tonight, but everyone else contributed in rebounding, holding down turnovers and handling the pressure.”

Griffin plays: Sophomore guard Kendall Griffin’s status for Wednesday’s game was in question after he suffered a rib injury at Hofstra last Saturday in the second half, but he started against Miami and played 22 minutes. He had 1 point and 3 rebounds.

“I thought he was a little rattled in the game,” Donlon said. “Just mentally, he wasn’t his normal self. That happens to guys. He’s a sophomore. Remember what I said about Cole Darling last year. We’re going to have some sophomores who don’t play well at times. It’s just part of it.”

Up next: The Raiders play their first ranked team of the season at 4 p.m. Saturday, visiting No. 11 Cincinnati. The Bearcats beat their crosstown rivals, Xavier, 60-45 on Wednesday to improve to 11-0.

Wright State is 0-8 all-time against Cincinnati, including 0-2 in Donlon’s first two years.

“We’ve just got to come out with the same intensity we had this game,” Young said. “Go out there and play hard, move with pace and just finish plays.”

Pacher update: AJ Pacher was not in uniform for Wednesday’s game. It was the first game the junior forward has missed this season, though he’s been battling a foot injury for weeks.

He hadn’t played more than 9 minutes in the last four games.

“AJ won’t play Saturday,” Donlon said. “I don’t know anything further than that. We’ll have this same group of guys for Saturday’s game, and we’ll get ready to go play a very good and very well-coached Cincinnati team.”
