Hot Topics

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland will authorize racetrack slots by executive order and lawmakers will provide him legal protection under a stalemate-ending budget compromise struck Friday.

Well, it's this simple . My husband and I go to Indiana twice a month and spend money there. We can now spend our money in Ohio and keep it here.

It isn't necessarily going to fix the budget, but it will provide millions to the state that otherwise leaves the state to WV or IN. It also helps rejuvenate a $900 million dollar a year industry---and that would be the equine industry for those not smart enough to figure that out.

If majority rule is considered forcing one group's view down the throat of another, then I'm not sure what you call elected officials working in opposition to the consistently stated will of the majority. It sounds like some people who comment here have an issue with democracy but are in favor of a backwards republic.

For those who would say that non-gamblers should support slots since it doesn't affect them either way, realize that gambling may be more than a simple economic issue for some.

Gambling, in any form, is wrong and everyone here knows it.
Yes, it is that simple.

Dear Hansel, you sure don't understand the racing side of the issue. These horses are taken care of and are treated like kings in their respective barns. Yes like anything else there is good and bad people. Hey some people don't take good care of their children but I don't see you complaining about that. Get the facts before you bash horse racing. Yeah for the slots, now we can race in Ohio instead of going to other states and away from home.

If the current budget proposals become real it could mean 30,000 low income children will lose care and 7,000 early education teachers will lose their jobs.

If this happens many low income families will find it cheaper to quit their jobs rather than pay child care with their low income wages.

The state loses income tax revenues twice: 1) Child Care teachers lose their job and 2) low income families quit theirs.

This will not balance the budget.

I agree let gambling come to Ohio if the voters should choose so. I completely disagree that gambling will solve our budget issues. This is a ridiculous comment. All the states with gambling also have budget issues.

"Ohio law prohibits "schemes of chance," which include slots and the governor's authority to expand the lottery with a non-ticketed game is legally tenuous.

Ohio voters have repeatedly rejected efforts to expand gambling."

All you gambling phobes already live in the great state of HO-hio and its that way because you are all afraid of change. And like most posters have said: If you dont like it, dont go. Plain and simple one would think.. But if on the off chance it could do some good, why not let it happen instaed of being the blockers to a possible financial soultion here. If i had a choice i`d rather vote it in with the hope that maybe it just might actually help OHIO. But youll all whine as usual. Whaaa! Whaaa!

Keep in mind Lawrenceburg, IN residents do not pay taxes either and still no pot holes....

Its time we recall Strickland. He's obviously not going to honor the will of the people. Right now its the lottery/slots, next what will it be? Why have a vote FOUR times with a resounding "NO" from the citizens of Ohio, and then do what you want anyway?
Throw the bum out.

I don't think anybody should vote for anything they're opposed to. But from a business/free enterprise perspective, it makes no sense to me why anybody would oppose gambling. You can't find a pothole in Lawrenceburg, IN.

so if gambling is a non issue in my life and its not, I dont gamble !!!! WHY should I vote yes to something I'm opposed to.

Your logic make no sense. My view is my own, nobody elses. Since my vote counts, I voted no amnd will do so again if it comes to that.

But since there are more that dont want it, than do want it, its all our fault and we're forcing our agenda/views on others.

But if for some strange reason Ohio ends up with a casino after this latest deal, so be it.

I voted against the last gambling issue because of how it was constructed, but I do support gambling in Ohio. Although some feel inclined to vote against something that is a non-issue in their lives, legalizing gambling in my opinion, doesn't force my views down anybody's throat (you can go to a movie instead), yet we both get what we want. But to prevent gambling sure as Hell puts your views down my throat.

Doesn't this same like the same rethoric they use when they want to pass a levy to financially enrich themselves ?

You don't know my situation and are quick to judge someone when you know nothing about them. I didn't "plan" on having a child yet, that sort of thing happens, I didn't "plan" on being a single mom, it happens. I work, I go to school full time, and I take care of my daughter so that I can provide better for her. I understand it takes money to take care of your family and I'm working on that. In the mean time, I need help. I'm not on public assistance other than childcare.

what does being on a level playing field with Ind. have to do with anything. If you want to gamble go gamble, but dont force your views / wants on me as a person who doesnt. The citizens of Ohio have spoken, but yet, there seems to be a back door in somehow ??

OK - so 7-8% of the state's education budget goes to the Lottery Profits For Education Fund, but how many schools in Ohio are having funding issues. Where is that $$$$ ????.

Whats next - legalizing "WEED" to balance the budget

tired of politics - I know your situation is difficult, but unless you situation changed drastically after the birth of your child(ren), you should have understood the costs of having children and factored that into your decision to have children. I know that sounds extermely cold, but it is the truth. Prevent pregnancy if you can't afford to raise the child(ren). All to often, some families are left to pay for all families. It wouldn't be so bad if it were ever enough.

BRING ON THE SLOTS BABY!!!

Hey, I didn't vote for the guy, but I support slots and casinos and I don't understand exactly why some Republicans oppose it.

This state needs more revenue...or they need to take a frigging meat axe to the budget (which they will never do)...

Apparently, you don't understand what it's like to be low income and have childcare that runs about $1,000.00 a month.

I don't like Strickland either and I hope he is a one and out wonder. But this isn't about Strickland and him being a democrat, it's about Ohio getting in the black again and staying in the black.
If people want to keep living in a poor state then keep voting out casino's.

My 2 year old is being removed from her school after over a year because this moron decided early childhood education doesn't warrant anything. Not to mention he decided that parents WITHOUT daycare can somehow continue to work. I will be the first person standing in line to collect my welfare check due to this jerk who decided ELI and Title 20 aren't programs that matter. When you purposely put people out of work you aren't doing something right cut the budget in one place pick it up in another

I agree that we should make it legal here in OHIO, why not? It seems as though everytime I go to the boat in INDY and speak with someone they are ALWAYS from OHIO...Just make it legal..

It does not have to be people that gamble that go to casino's, I been to the boats in Indiana and simply spent money on the great buffet and has some very good food.
No need to gamble
12:58 PM, 7/10/2009
I don't gamble either but for those who do, the mney should be kept in Ohio and stop supporting other states.
"Make casino's legal STATE WIDE" in Ohio and then we can have a state without buget woes and a state with money. People would come here to Ohio to spend their money.

We don't need slots betting at tracks - we need the casinos like Indiana has, it's that simple. A casino shouldn't be a ballot issue, someone wants to build, then build, and they will come. I was hoping the horse racing would die, it's a cruel and inhumane industry where so many spent & used up animals are sent to slaughter ... there are better ways to make a living, not off the backs of these beautiful animals. The governor should find a better way, shameful.
