Wind advisory extended for region

A wind advisory issued for the region this morning will last a bit longer than its announced 8 p.m. expiration, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

At 4 p.m., National Weather Service forecasters extended the wind advisory through 11 p.m. this evening.

Winds are expected to range from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 46 mph, according to NWS meteorologist Don Hughes.

Scattered tree and power line damage is possible, along with some minor property damage during the highest gusts, Hughes said.

“The winds should be dying down after midnight and tomorrow we’ll go back to partly sunny and a little bit cooler,” he said. “It’ll be about (a high of) 61 tomorrow.”

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to redevelop this evening.

“We’re still looking at a quarter to a half inch (of rain) overnight,” Hughes said.

Winds this strong can make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles, so motorists in such vehicles should use caution until the winds subside, Hughes said.

A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 31 to 39 mph or gusts will range between 46 and 57 mph.
